Babies: 9 - 12 Months

How many times per day does your 6.5 month old nurse?

DS nurses around 6am, then again before his morning nap, again before his afternoon nap, and again before bed around 8pm. Sometimes he'll nurse one extra time before bed, so it's 4-5 times per day. I have no idea how much he's getting. He's peeing and pooping plenty, but this still doesn't seem like a lot of milk.

  • Loading the player...
  • I'm jealous! My DD nurses 6-7x a day, usually 7. (That's in addition to 2 solid meals, though she will only eat 1/2 jar at each)
  • He gets 3 jars of food per day, and he's still in the 90% for weight. But I want to make sure he's getting enough nutrients from milk. Maybe I'll call the pedi tomorrow to make sure it's enough.

  • Do you ever give him a bottle, so you can gauge approx. how much he eats at a feeding?  As long as he is getting at least 20-24 ounces a day and gaining weight, he should be fine!  So if he is eating about 5 ounces each time, it's fine.
  • The little stinker won't take a bottle. I'm trying to get him interested in a sippy cup...we're making very slow progress. But I'd guess he's getting at least 4 or 5 ounces per feed since he gets both boobs each time.

  • Every child is different as well as every mother's milk supply per feeding. My dd nurses at least 7-8 times/day the days I stay at home but if we are out or if she has good naps then is less 5-6 I would say.                                       I am sure he is doing great, believe me if he were hungry he knows where to find food and how.  Besides his peeing and pooping and gaining appropriate weight.

I think one of the reason he may not be nursing as much as other babies is  because of the solid food ( 3 jars ).  Talk to your peditrician about it, he may consider lowering the amount of solids that he is receiving.  The main source of nutrients and energy should come from the milk; solid food provides very little cals and nutritients at this age, is more of learning experience for the body to process new food, detect possible allergens and for him to familiarize with the food, textures and flavors.

    Hope this help!
