Babies: 0 - 3 Months

confused...by my pedi?

DD had her shots today. While we were there I was asking my pedi a couple questions. I asked when he would suggest starting DD on cereal. He said that i SHOULD have started her at 8 weeks....and she SHOULD be eating it with a spoon. Really? She isn't even 3 months old...and I should be spoon feeding her? Why do I feel like this is a little to early...anyone spoon feeding their newborn already?

Re: confused...by my pedi?

  • My pedi said not until 4 months but lots of things i've read said 3 months is the earliest.  8 weeks sounds WAY early

  • How old is your pedi?  That sounds like advice my mom got back in the '70s.  Most pediatricians recommend no food before 6 months.  They really don't need anything except breastmilk or formula until then.

  • Whew!!! Ok. I feel better!!! I thought I was missing something major!!!  He is like 50 years old....so not too out of the loop. he said cereal at 2-4 months, then fruits and vegis 4-6 months and juices ...and I just looked at him when he told me all of that.....I KNEW it HAD to be way too young to do that!

  • Definitely wait on the cereal until at least 4 months unless your LO is having other issues, like reflux, etc.

Also, there is really no need to give kids juice, unless there's a constipation issue.  They are better off just eating the actual fruit.  Even for my 2.5 yr old juice is a 'treat' and it's 50/50 water and juice when he does get it.

  • I asked DS ped the same question and she said 6 months because there tiny digestive systems aren't mature enough and cereal and "solids" and juices can upset there stomach and possibly cause food allergies.

Your pedi sounds like a nutjob.  We will not be introducing any solids until 6 months.  We did 4 months with DS#1 and I think it was too early.  Before 4 months, most babies still have a tongue thrust reflex that will push any food back out of their mouths.  And there's no reason to start with cereal either.  DS#1 had rice cereal and then avocado.

HE IS!! He came SO highly recommended by everyone that I know. I've taken DD there 3 times and all 3 times I've had issues/complaints. At our first appointment he was completely impersonal . At the second appointment I asked a question and he treated me like I was crazy. (I forget the question, but I remember worrying and worrying that i was doing something wrong with DD and then he just dismissed me) and NOW he is telling me that my 11 week old is getting a late start at eating "solids." I am going to start the search for a new doc!

Another PP stated that juices are something that babies/children shouldn't have. I wasn't planning on doing them often...like you 50/50 on "special occasions." That is ANOTHER reason I was stumped by my doctor today....ugh. The people that I know that go to him are CRAZY!

Did you interview with him before you decided to select him?  If not, I would definitely recommend doing this if you decide to search for a new doctor.  YOu can get a great sense of their style and how you will like them.  Good luck!

  • Ours said we would discuss starting trying to start rice cereal at his 4 month check up if he seems ready for it and his tongue thrust reflex seems to be gone.

  • I'd get a new pedi.  That's insane!  Ours today said he'd give us the info at his 4 month appointment, but he'd rather his EBF patients wait until 6 months.

  • 4 months isn't necessarily too early. As long as their tongue thrust reflex is gone and they have decent head/ trunk control i.e. aren't slumped over in a supported sitting position, it's OK to try it. You don't necessarily have to wait until 6 months, but I would def go by what your pedi says (not yours OP, people whose pedi has told them to wait) If they wanted you to start because of reflux, usually they just tell you to add the rice cereal to a bottle.
