Northern California Babies

So you guys won't believe this!

I just heard from the pedi.  Some of the lab work is back and they are suspecting that Alex has a urinary tract infection.  Total left field, right?!?!?

He has been getting up in the night to pee, which he never ever does.  That started with the fever, but I thought he was just getting up because I kept going in and checking him and I was bugging him/waking him up.  He has not complained of hurting or burning when he pees but he has complained of pain on his lower right side, which we've been telling the docs about.

They took a urine sample and the doc said the normal "white count" (?) is 5, and Alex's is 16.  Surprise  They will not know for sure if it is a UTI until the culture sits overnight.  She is going to call me back as soon as she gets the lab results in the late morning/early afternoon tomorrow.  She also said the white count in his blood is high which indicates there is some sort of infection somewhere.

I know it was hard to "see", but I'm really mad that my pedi sent me away on Saturday- which was day 6 of fever, still saying "virus, virus, virus".   I LOVE the pedi we saw today and I think I am going to switch over to her for our main doctor.  She was way on top of it and even stayed late to check if any of the labs were back and called me at 7 PM to give me those preliminary results.

I know this has been an endless string of posts and me freaking out- so THANK YOU to all of you who have replied and made me feel like less of a freak.  Embarrassed  Alex & I both appreciate your awesome dust and support.

Heather :)

  • Wow that is crazy!  So glad they found out what could be causing it so he can be on the mend quickly!  I too would change Drs.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but I'm so glad something is wrong with him because that means he can be fixed. But how random is a UTI?! I hope that it and he gets his meds tomorrow and is on the mend fast!

Totally not taking it the wrong way!  I feel exactly the same!  Thank God something  turned up that can explain it!!

Totally random.  I'm so glad I stuck with my gut!!

  • It is great that you followed your gut and that this Dr has helped. I agree with you that switching Drs is a good idea. Sounds like this new Dr is a really good one!
  • Wow that is crazy!  I'm glad you are finally getting some answers!  Poor little guy.  I agree too that I would change Pedis if this one seems like a much better fit.

  • Wow, I never would have suspected that!  So glad you followed your mommy instinct even when the docs didn't "get it" - and sorry it took so long for answers, but glad you finally have them!  Hope A is feeling much better very soon!

  • I am so glad that you finally have an answer and an easily fixable answer too, yay!  From adult males that I've known to have UTI's (not many) they've said that they had no idea until it was super bad, like peeing blood or completely unable to pee.  I'm guessing that men must just respond differently to them.

I think it's good you'll be changing docs.  With Alex's febrile seziures I think that you have to be a bit more proactive with things and a doctor who is not able to shift from laid back to more sensitive based on the background of the patient isn't going to make you happy long term.  The doc you've worked with on this sounds exactly like what you need.

I hope your little man in on the mend and the fever breaks soon.

glad to hear someone caught something on his labs!  did they tell you to start treating it in the meantime?  A Cranistat pill knocks mine out pretty immediately (as does a tsp of baking soda in 8oz of water, but I don't know how you'd dose for a child with that).

  • So glad the Dr. got to the bottom of the problem. I would totally switch to her. I tend to like doctors that don't overreact and are conservative with testing/procedures, but in this case she was not doing her job (IMO).

    Hope Alex feels better quickly!!

Ditto this, I was starting to worry. I hope he feels better soon.

  • I'm hoping this is the reason behind everything. I agree with you about changing the pedi, you need someone who listens and doesn't make you feel like a crazy parent.
