3rd Trimester

What to eat before induction?

I am going to be induced Thursday night late (starting with the gel) and my doctor told me to make sure I eat something that sticks to my bones. The induction paperwork she gave me says to eat something light and bland but she crossed it out and told me to make sure I eat well because it will probably take up to 24 hours from start to finish.

Any reccomendations?

Re: What to eat before induction?

  • Gosh, it amazes me how little they tell us about anything.

Good luck.  I can't help you.  I couldn't fathom being induced, so I don't know what to tell ya.

  • eat anything you want.  you probably want to avoid anything that might upset your stomach (greasy food) but anything else is fine.  i was induced with DS and my doc basically said the same thing...but...cant remember what i ate :)  i would go with something like pasta and some type of meat in the sauce or chicken on the side.  GL on thurs!

  • When I think of something sticking to my bones, I think of a nice heavy pasta dish - lasagna??

  • I ate a footlong from Subway the night I was induced. I say eat what sounds good, and make it a pretty big meal because an induction can take a long time. The cytotec they started my induction with actually sent me right into labor after the first dose on my cervix, so I didn't need any more medication. That also meant I started having pretty regular, painful contractions about 3-4 hours after I ate, so don't have anything that might make you nauseous.
  • I had a bagel the morning I was induced and I was fine.
  • I guess just make sure it has a good amount of protein if you want to stay full for a while.

  • I was discussing what to eat with one of the doulas/childbirth educators from my hospital and she basically said that you should eat like you're about to run a marathon: complex carbs, protein and stuff that's not laden with sodium. You're about to put your body through possibly the most strenuous workout of your life (and the L&D process really is a workout!), so you need to eat like you're preparing for it.

  • Is it the morning? When I think something that will "stick to your bones" when it comes to breakfast foods, I think oatmeal. I would put some walnuts or almonds in there, a banana, and maybe some raisins. Then I'd drink milk or just pour milk over top of it all.

I've never been induced, but I think this would keep me full for quite a while and keep me going.

EDIT: Duh, I just read again and you said Thur late night. I'd still eat this. I love bkfst food. haha.

  • you are lucky!  i was suppose to be induced in the morning and they told me not to eat anything!  the hospital called around 1am when i was suppose to go in at 5am and told me they would call me to tell me when to come in.  all day long i couldn't eat anything waiting for them to call.  i cheated and had a biscut at cracker barrel while my husband and mother pigged out.  around 4pm i still hadn't heard from the hospital, called the nurses at my dr.s office and she said to eat something but make it light.  i had the leftovers from the chicken, broccoli, pasta dish i had from olive garden the night before and about an hour later the hospital called and told me to come in.

this time around i'm going to eat like normal if i have to be induced.  just think, it you go into labor on your own after you just ate like it was christmas dinner they wouldn't know, so why suffer!  i guess i was naive and just did what they said.  unless you know for sure you are having surgery i say eat up!

  • A big, hearty meal that has plenty of carbs, protein, and good fat as well as fiber to help keep you feeling full longer!

When I was induced with DS I hadn't eaten in 3 days.  It was terrible and when it came time to push (which I did for 2.5 hours), I was exhausted.

    GL!

  • I'm scheduled to be induced at 3pm tomorrow (beginning with the cervadil I believe).  I called the birthplace to ask what/if I could eat, and the nurse told me to "eat a regular diet", basically whatever, and that they would probably feed me dinner that night.  HTH!
