ds still wakes to eat at night...anyone tried this?

someone that I ran into a few days ago told me what their Dr. suggested.  When they wake up at night instead of bf like normal give them some water.  This woman said that she did it with both her kids and after 2,3 nights of giving water instead of milk/formula they stopped waking during the night.

If any of you have tried this I have some questions.  Do you give the water in a bottle or cup?  Did a lot of crying occur when you offered the water (I imagine my ds being pissed and just screaming!)?  Do feel like it was worth doing or would I be better off just stopping cold turkey with the night feedings?

For those that have other methods to stop night feedings your advice would be appreciated also!

  • Instead of bringing her in to bed to nurse, I just soothed her in the crib with the paci and got her back to sleep. I dropped the night feedings about a month ago. She started to?STTN some nights (more often than not) and the nights that she did wake, I wouldn't nurse her as I did before.

  • My pedi recommended this too & I tried it.  He said if you feed them, they will start to wake up hungry at that same time every night out of habit vs. hunger.  And the water isn't "habit-forming".  We tried it & DD wasn't thrilled.  She was calmer than if we let her cry it out, but still upset.  It took a couple nights - I would give her some water & then let her cry for 15 min & repeat until she fell asleep.  She did start SSN again after a couple nights.

We gave the water in a bottle.

  • I haven't tried it but I've heard that too.. I've also heard you can slowly wean them off the night feeding by putting less and less powder formula in the same amount of oz of water (so first night 6 oz water per 5 oz equivalent scoops.. then 6oz water per 2 scoops, 6oz water per 1 scoop, until it's only water but hopefully they stop waking before then). That way their body slowly adjusts to having less calories at night and will hopefully make up for it during the day.

  • Its on the baby whisperer boards. i tried it and DS basically cried until I gave him some formula. It was a no-go for us.

  • Haven't tried this but I imagine that my dd would freak.  We're getting to the point now where sometimes all we have to do is pat her on the back, butt, or belly and she'll fall back asleep.  If she doesn't I know she's hungry, and I gladly feed her when she wakes up hungry.  It doesn't bother me.
  • Hmm.. sorry for the long sig, trying to figure out how to fix it.

  • hmm, may have to try this- right now nursing is our only trick for getting back to sleep in the night. Luckily she usually only wakes once to eat. Last night she went 10 hours so I know she can do it!
