D.C. Area Babies

Joining you this fall!

Hello everyone. My DH will be sent to Walter Reed this fall to kick off his nursing career in the Army. We've already been confirmed to go there, but we do not have a date yet. He has to attend a 9 week summer course before we move and he has to pass his NCLEX exam before he can do the course.

We're looking at the Silver Spring and Kensington area.

If anyone has any suggestions I'd love some advice! I'm moving from being here in KS's capital my entire life to something 50x larger, lol. I'm a bit nervous.

Re: Joining you this fall!

  • Welcome! I live in the Silver Spring/Takoma Park area and I love it (Takoma Park is another area to look at - it's a small town that straddles Maryland and DC and is would also be very convenient for you). This is a great area with lots to do, especially for families and kids.

Will you be able to visit the area before you decide exactly where to live? I'm not exaggerating when I say neighborhoods can change from block to block, so it would be really helpful to look at things in person. Both Silver Spring and Kensington are nice, but there are not-so-nice parts, too. I recommend renting before buying.

The DC area has so many great things! I'm sure you'll have a good time here.

  • Welcome!  I'm a displaced nestie/bumpie as I've moved back to Central Va but just wanted to also wish your husband good luck on his boards!  I'm an RN - glad to have him in the field.

  • Thanks! I have the Apartment Guide for the DC area and checking out the different places. DH stayed in a hotel in Silver Spring and really loved the area so I hope we find something.

Unfortunately we wont be able to go out due to finances and time constraints, but I know someone out there who might be able to go to a couple places for me.

We're only guaranteed a year there before DH is deployable or transfers so I hope to find a place accommodating to military families.

  • Let us know if you narrow it down to a few specific neighborhoods and you want any feedback on them.

  • Welcome to the area!  You're probably already familiar with them, but MilitaryByOwner.com and AHRN.com are great sites for house-hunting.  I agree with the poster who said that towns around here can change drastically just from block to block, so if your DH has any connections to people already living here, definitely ask their thoughts.  Silver Spring has some very nice, family-friendly neighborhoods - it's where we did most of our searching.  My DD goes to a preschool there that we love.

Something to consider is how "urban" a place you want to live in.  Inside the Beltway (I-495) and some spots above it can be a bit busy and congested at times.  Personally, as someone who lives very close to the DC border, I'd prefer to be further out in a more suburban-feeling town.  The bad traffic around here (plus working around two little kids' schedules) makes me feel housebound any time before 10am and after 3pm...it can be limiting.  But it's all about what your priorities and what you're looking for: exciting, city-ish living vs. something quieter (and maybe cheaper) but potentially a worse commute for your DH.  Good luck...hope you can get some helpful tips here.
