Bo vs Beau (clicky)

I like Beau. Partly because it looks more complete than Bo. Partly because it is French and my mom's side of the family is completely French. And partly because Bo just reads as B.O. (body odor) to me and that is a little much for me to want to saddle on my kid.

My DH makes (sarcastic, annoying) comments that Beau is harder to spell. Well dear it's 4 letters, put forth a little effort. Plus he feels that Beau is a "girlier" spelling.

So if you had to choose between the two spellings, which would you choose?

Re: Bo vs Beau (clicky)

  • I wouldn't call a girl Beau.  French spelling doesn't automatically make it feminine, although it sometimes seems that way to a lot of Americans.  Beau is definitely better, Bo is just... not a whole name.

  • I don't really like either as given names. To me it's more of a nn but I voted Beau.

  • Love the name Beau! Not so much the Bo spelling.
  • Haha, thanks everyone. I guess if I didn't make it clear, this would be for a boy.

I also think Bo looks incomplete. I cannot think of any names that are longer that could be shortened to Bo, that even make sense to me.

I would have thought if you were going to shorten Beauregard, it would be shortened to Beau. Weird.

I have a friend who named her son Boaz and they call him Bo for short.

Beau for a name Bo for nn

  • THere is something about "bo" as a name that just looks dumb.  As said, Beau is a name. Bo is a NN.

  • Bo was my dog's name so a big no on that one.  If your family is so French would they not think it's strange for you to name your son Beau?  I mean that would be like an english speaking person naming their son handsome.

Most of them are here in the states now and speak English. It's a French name (I realize it's also a French word). It's just a nod to my heritage, as others do with Irish names or German, etc.

  • Bo is usually a nickname for Robert.
  • I agree, that Bo is a good nickname for Robert but I have also seen Bo just as a name which I think is fine.

I think Beau is too girly of spelling for a boy.  Can you imagine a football/baseball/basketball player named Beau?

    This made me smile.

I think Bo looks like a NN, but Beau an entire name.

There are actually quite a few professional sport players in existence with the first name of Beau, with this spelling.

Yes! I know several VERY handsome manly men named Beau. I love the name Beau b/c it screams handsome and masculine to me. Bo? Not so much? That screams hillbilly to me.  It's crazy what a spelling can do, huh?

My mom's best friend has a son named Bodee, Bo for short.

I prefer Beau.  I love the French language (and the name), so Bo just doesn't cut it for me.

I agree. When I hear the name out loud, I think it's very country and would assume that it is short for something. But of the two spellings, I would go Beau.
