Trouble TTC

How did you get test results?

I'm wondering if this is typical of RE offices or if it's a little strange. I've had an HSG, CD 3 b/w, lots of other blood work, and several ultrasounds this cycle and haven't really gotten any results. The doctor told me that everything looked good on the HSG and the nurse has explained what she's seen on the ultrasounds, but I have no idea what any of my blood work results are. I realize I could ask, but the typical protocol seems to be that patients go over all of the results with the doctor after everything is done. That appointment is next week for me. Since he's looking to confirm PCOS, I'm not as desperate to find out my results, but we haven't gotten anything back on DH's SA either. I asked if his results were in at my appointment this morning and because I was at a different office, they didn't have my chart. However, the front office person made it sound like the results wouldn't be in yet anyway and DH gave his sample a week and a half ago. They do send the sample out to their main office about an hour away for the more detailed analysis, but even with that it seems like they should be in by now. I really don't want to have to wait another week and have to hear everything from the doctor, especially if the results are bad. Did your RE office call you with your DH's SA results? Did you have to ask? How long did it take?

Re: How did you get test results?

  • At my old RE's office, it seemed like I practically had to beg for results, or they never really even knew that they came in until I bothered them (which they made it seem like, that I was bothering them).

At my new RE, we get the results the same day, and most of the time my doctor calls me with the results, but sometimes it's the nurse. They are much easier to get on the phone too, and my nurse always checks her email.

  • For my SHG & DH's SA we got the results the same day (phone call that afternoon for SA).  For my b/w, it depends.  CD3, betas, P4 I get a call the same day from my nurse (they run all of that in house).  Some other things I've had to get run at LabCorp and those results took almost 2-wks to get.  I got a call from their scheduling person since everything was "normal" she just gave me the results.  The ones we've had to send out for that had abnormal results I got a call saying I needed to schedule with the RE to go over it.

I have heard some women who's SA's got sent out say it can take up to 2-weeks to get the results back.

This actually makes me feel a bit better, thank you. Thankfully I knew ahead of time that they always send out SAs, so I didn't think it was due to something being abnormal. I do wish there was a little more communication going on, but I'm thinking a lot of the delay is because it is a large practice with several offices. The office staff has been very friendly and nice so far, so I guess I'll just be patient and wait to talk to the doctor next week. When I get to the point of having betas, though, I will be bugging them like crazy for those results.

  • My RE's office calls within a day of getting results, usually they call that day. If it's been a week or more, then I'd call for the results personally. But then again, I'm impatient like that :P

  • My RE will usually order several tests at once and then have a "Re-Group" meeting to go over everything.  No results are ever given over the phone or sent to us without them being explained by the doctor first.

It's kind of a pain and test in patience but I understand why.

    Good Luck.

  • I really like my RE and the office staff.  They are nice, but it takes me a while to get my test results too.  I had about 6 blood tests done last week and my GTT.  I'm still waiting for the results.  DH had his SA done over a week ago and no results yet on that either. I guess everything isn't in yet.  Once it is we have to schedule an appt. to get them.  They won't say over the phone.

  • My RE called us the same day with results.  I get same day results with anything we do as long as I am there by 10.
  • My RE and Dh's Uro work the same way.  We didn't get any results until we had gotten all the tests and went back to his office.  I have really tried to get Dh's SA results ahead of time, but the nurses say the doc wants us to come in for an appointment to get them.

  • It really depends on the clinic. My clinic has an online patient portal where they release most test data. Its rarely in a patient friendly format though. In house testing (all monitoring and SAs) done before noon are usually posted around 2pm. It's not necessary to access the portal though- we usually get a followup call if there's anything wrong by 5pm same day. If everything is fine, there's no call, just a general appointment to discuss. IVF monitoring always gets a general medicine update call- they don't really discuss the results beyond "looks good" though unless there's actually something wrong.
