Baby Cold?

DH & I both have a mild cold, sore throat & we have to blow our nose a lot. ?I think DS may have it too, when he sleeps it sounds like he's choking sometimes on boogers and when he wakes up I suction his nose before I feed him.

I'm going to call his pedi but what will they do? ?I know he's at a risk for pneumonia, but should I wait because there is nothing they can do yet? ?I know they say wait until he won't eat or have a fever but I just hate the fact that I'm waiting for him to get worse.

Advice, opinions?

Re: Baby Cold?

  • If he is in a specific Pneumonia risk category I would def. call, but they will probably tell you to elevate his head when sleeping (either in a car seat or by propping up one end of the crib - using books or something), to use a humidifier, and to use a saline drip and bulb aspirator. If he is struggling or laboring to breathe, definitely call.?

  • DS had a really bad cold - the kind with the "crunchy" cough.  After about 2 weeks of her not getting any better, I finally made an appt. with my doc.  She listened to her chest to make sure it had not moved down there (it hadn't) and she told me that there was not a lot to do when they are this young.  Just do the hot shower - steam thing, use a humidifier and suction.  She said her son coughed and wheezed his way thru the first 6 months of his life.  My DS has gotten better - thank goodness.  If you feel you need to bring your child in...then do so.  As my doc said, Better to be safe then sorry.
  • My little guy has had a stuffy nose for a couple of days I think from his clogged tear duct. I called the pedi and have him on medicine for that but last night he was up a lot having a hard time sleeping so I put him to sleep in his car seat, used the "Little Noses" saline spray and aspirator which helped a lot. Tonight I'm going to prop the crib instead so he doesn't get used to sleeping in the carseat. These were all recommended to do by our pedi.

I think a humidifier would help too. I would call if you think it's bad esp if he's at risk for pnemonia.

  • When DD had a cold a couple weeks ago, I called the doctor to see what I should do. They said to come in since she was so young. Also they wanted to check for respiratory distress. I would try to go in, just to be safe, though I am sure he is fine!

All they told me to do was wait it out. They said to only use saline drops and suction if she has a hard time eating b/c of the congestion. She was fine within a week. Good Luck!
