Home owners ? Is this an emergency

Dh and I discovered this afternoon that our water pipe in our front yard is leaking and our yard is starting to be marsh like. We called the H2O Company and since it is after hours our option is to call 911 or wait until tomorrow morning. WWYD?

  • can you shut it off at the street?

  • Loading the player...
  • Ditto shutting off at the street... There's usually a valve there.  otherwise, if its gushing,I'd call 911.  They'll tell you if its not at emergency.  Forgive the typos... Typing on my phone.

  • I should also say it isn't near the house, it is out towards the street. There is a easment (sp) on our property and the city owns a strip of land the size of a driveway in front. We think it is where the city water meets our pipe. There is a sewer drain right near it and it slopes towards the storm drain so it will drain towards it. Shane says it can wait until tomorrow and won't shut off the water. Grrr... I don't know if I agree.

  • When you call 911 (did it really say to call 911?) they should just take your info and give it to the water company on call person. That person will call you or come out and take a look at it. People call for much more simpler things.

  • I would just call the "non-emergency" police number and let them know what is going on. Then they can check it out and make the final call on what to do.

  • Your city should have an after hours emergency number. I would see if you can find that online...
  • Since jdcskf said to call, I'd call. She knows for sure. I'd also shut it off at th street before you go to bed.

  • Do you live in a city?  Than 911 is your after hours non-emergency line.  If you lived outside a city water district, in unicorporated county, then there is usually a different water line.  City public works usually use 911 as their on call line.

I can tell you after two main line to house water leaks, sooner is better.  We were able to get the water district to cut the leak bill in half, but it still sucked.  And the longer the leak goes, the harder it is to find the source.  We've had to dig up our side yard by hand twice...but at least we learned the second time and got a entire new line, not just patching the leak like we did the first time.  Good luck!

  • I used to work for a city and I can tell you if the break is between your house and the meter, then you are liable for the bill.  So shut it off ASAP.  Most cities cannot cut your bill down since they are mostly passing the cost through to you and don't make enough profit to give you a discount.

    Sorry that this happened!

  • We had this happen to us last summer.  We were able to turn off the switch and hired someone to come and tell us "exactly" where the leak was.  It was within a 4sq ft vicinity of where he told us it was.  I can get more info from him tonight if you need a referal or any help - let me know!  Definitely turn off the water at the street though... and you're liable for pretty much anything if it isn't at the meter.  Good luck!
