Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Sleep questions (of course!)

I keep reading posts on this board or on my birth month board about babies sleeping 4 hours or more at least once during a 24-hour period.  Marcus only did this while he was in the hospital and several times during the first week or so home.  I'm lucky if I get a 3-hour break.  He was doing well napping in his crib until he got acid reflux, and though he's on meds now, it's hard to get him to nap anywhere other than in our arms, a sling, or a baby carrier, and sometimes in a bouncy seat.

He is eating BM and not formula, so I know that makes some difference.  I've tried white noise, and he does sleep swaddled.   If you have a baby that sleeps for prolonged stretches, do you do anything in particular: put them down when they're sound asleep/semi-awake, cluster feed, let them fuss a bit, etc.?

I'm really not sure how to handle a "normal" baby.  DS1 had severe reflux that wasn't successfully treated until he was nearly 5 months old, so he was up screaming every 1.5-2 hours.

  • My LO is one day older than your boy and also breastfed, so I guess we're in a similar situation.  I don't do anything different in particular to help her sleep for longer stretches, but she will randomly sleep for 5 to 6 hours some nights.  I just thought you should know it is totally random because I'm not doing anything different before putting her down on those nights.  If there is a trick, I don't know it!  I think it's more just luck of the draw.  H will sleep for 6 hour stretches 2 nights in a row and then go back to 3 hours.  Such a tease...
