Parenting after 35

Is this crazy? Or am I being naive?

I found out yesterday that a friend, whose LO is 3 months YOUNGER than M, already signed her boy up for preschool. As in preschool that starts when he's 3... a year and a half from now.

She's super chilled out and not remotely Type A/Dragon mom-ish. Am I being lazy in not getting M's preschool nailed down? I mean, I've started researching schools but am nowhere near making a decision.

  • I think it depends on where you live.  But if she lives near you, then get a move-on, woman!   Those college scholarships don't just grow on trees, ya know.

I haven't even thought about ANYTHING yet, but DH is convinced we'll be homeschooling the boy.  Um.. yeah... we'll see.

  • We live in So Cal, so I can see the need to be, um, pushy. I'd be all about homeschooling him through preschool if I wasn't concerned about him socializing... which I am.

     Hmph.

  • It just seems so far off!  By the time mlle margaux hits 3 we're hoping to be in or on our way to France, where preschool is public.

I don't think you're being lazy, I just think the system is insane.  Maybe set a week somewhere where you nail it the heck down.  :)

  • I live in SoCal as well and we put Betty Jane on a list for a preschool when she was 10 months old. And the school we signed her up for isn't even one of the elite schools. It's so crazy. I think a lot of it has to do with living in Los Angeles. I'm sure if we were living in a more suburban area of the country we wouldn't have to put her on a list. I'm sure you've still got lots of time.
  • It depends on the school. A very popular school near my house has a waiting list of about 2 years. Which means that if I wanted A to go there, I would have had to sign him up already. But we don't know where we will be living a year or two from now, so I can't sign him up anywhere. If I were you, I would get M registered soon, especially if you know which school you'd like for him Smile

  • What?! I am not ready to start thinking about this. But now that you put the thought in my head of coarse I have to research this. Now if only we can buy a house so I know where to look.

  • So if you do sign up with a school & put yur child on the waiting list, do you have to pay anything in advance to hold their spot?

That's part of why I'm just researching; we're moving in the next 6 months or so. I'm trying do familiarize myself with schools in all the different areas we might end up.

    I hope not.
