Amber Teething Necklaces

I asked a few friends what they recommended for teething pain relief, some of them said an amber teething necklace.
Has anyone tried this. I like the idea of not putting medication (oragel natural) in her mouth when she is having pain, but I'm nervous about the idea of putting a necklace on her. I'm not so much worried about the necklace breaking, since they are all knotted in between each bead, so they don't scatter if it breaks.

What do you think??

Re: Amber Teething Necklaces

  • We got one :) I only keep it on him when he's awake & I'm right with him, but I inspected the way it was made closely & at least the ones from Inspired by Finn where I got mine use some heavy duty thread, I'm comfortable using it :) we aren't heavy into teething so I haven't been able to tell how much of a difference it makes yet.

  • My pediatrician's office specializes in homeopathic as well as traditional medicine, and when I asked about amber at DS' four-month, they said it was not a remedy they were familiar with and they didn't sound too supportive. (I was a little sad--those necklaces are cute--but I'm glad I asked. No sense wasting money.)

They did highly recommend hyland's teething tablets. They're supposed to be better and much safer than orajel. We haven't had much teething pain yet, so I haven't bought any yet, but I plan to pick some up soon.

These were recalled late last fall by the FDA because of large doses of belladonna in them, which is one of the active ingredients.  Just FYI.

  • Personally, I think it's kind of a superstitious thing more than anything... it has to be 100% pure amber to contain the chemical that supposedly helps - and most of the necklaces are too cheap to actually be 100% amber.

And even then, there's really no proof that they work if it IS 100% pure amber.

    I wouldn't waste my money.

    Just IMHO

  • I was leaning towards a "no," but wanted to get a few more opinions. It could also be that their babies were ones who didn't really have a ton of teething pain. My little sweet thing is miserable now. One of my friends did suggest Hyland's stuff. I will have to figure out where I can find it around here.

This exactly. Although DS does occasionally wear his while sleeping because he falls asleep with it on.

Seriously? Dang, nothing's safe anymore is it? Can't believe the pediatrician's office didn't know this. I feel like I have to research everything myself.

  • If it's been recalled, why is it still on the shelves? Is this another one of their "warnings" like the oragel. People have been using that for decades, and are fine. My parents relied on it. Soon our kids will have to live in bubbles.

(Not attacking that you gave the information...I appreciate it. Just an overall annoyance with government entities)

  • My bad...I see it's not on the shelves anymore, but it was a voluntary recall. No conclusive links to any reports.
