I'm in a bit of a pickle... my doctors office has been delivering at a Birthing Center within a hospital. It's basically a home-birth setting but within a hospital. They have huge jacuzzis and it's a really great comfortable space. We had our tour just a week ago, and were so excited to use the space.
At my appointment today, I noticed a sign in the waiting room saying they no longer would be delivering at the Birthing Center, effective immediately. Naturally I was taken aback but wanted to talk to a doctor about it in person.
Today was the day I met with one of the other potential doctors who would deliver, and asked her if it was because of the hospitals policy to remain on the floor the entire time between check-in and delivery. She said that it wasn't, but rather because they did not feel comfortable being an elevator-ride one floor away from necessary equipment needed in an emergency, and that things could be time sensitive.
I'm a bit broken on this one -- obviously something must have happened with their practice that went badly, for them to make this decision. However, I feel like they are assuming a worst case scenario now, and I really really was uncomfortable with the "regular" labor & delivery setting. There are plenty of Midwives and other OBs who delivery still, but should I just suck it up and change my entire birth plan? Gah.
Re: switching DRs at 32 weeks?!
What is going to make your birth most comfortable with you? Sticking with this setting or with a particular physician group? I would go with what will make you feel the most calm.
Also, I wouldn't assume an 'incident' happened; it could just be they had a recommendation from an attorney not to take the risk, or medical malpractice insurance was going to be higher, or something.
What's more important to you? Having the birthing center you love? or the doctor you are familiar with?
If the center wins out, I would look for a new doctor.
Another thing you might want to ask is what your other options are. Go visit those and then make a decision.
