Health & Exercise

When can I start exercising?

I had DS a week ago, I'm skeptical about being ready this soon but I feel great. I'm craving a (light) workout and am wondering when I can start. I'm assuming arms & legs should be fine to start soon, but are there any guidelines for abs this soon after birth?

Thanks!

Re: When can I start exercising?

  • I don't have an answer to your question, but that's awesome your feeling great so quickly!!!

I hope (and think) I will be the same way, so I am curious to the answers you do get.

  • I would start with something little, like walking.  I took a walk days after I had my first.  The strain of weighs, even light may strain you abs too much.  I would wait the 6 weeks before doing anything more.
  • I started walking two days after birth and running a week after birth. I started weights and abs pretty soon thereafter too.

  • I was walking about 5 days after my delivery.... but my midwife called and told me I needed to take it easy. So I took another week to just relax and then started walking again. About 4 weeks PP I called and asked if I could jog. She said "absolutely not" so I just stuck to walking, pilates and yoga. I felt great and ready, but in retrospect, I needed that time to heal. My 6 week check up was at about 5.5 weeks and I went for a run the next day. It also really depends on your delivery. If you have stitches at all, you really should wait the 6 weeks, as hard as it is.
