Mason was born at 34 weeks, but because of his size no one would know he was a preemie. We did not have a NICU stay. He stayed in the hospital for 6 days due to trouble regulating his temp and jaundice. We feel blessed he was so healthy.
With that being said, he is still not crawling or pulling up to stand. He will stand if we are holding onto him or if he has something to put his hands on. He does not walk along furniture. He does not raise into a crawling position when on his belly. He will do like a 360 on his belly and move backwards on his belly. Should I be worried? My pedi did not seem concerned at his 9 month appointment. By now, I would at least think he would be closer to crawling. Any suggestions on what I can do? Thanks ladies!
Re: XP: 11 Months and Not Crawling/Standing
My older son was born at 33 weeks, and had some gross motor delays - just slower to crawl, walk etc. He didn't walk until 20 months, which is quite late. I was concerned, of course, and had him evaluated. They offered some resources, but basically he just learned it in his own time. They said to encourage stair climbing, playing at playgrounds, taking gymnastics classes, etc. DS is now almost 6, and you'd never know he was a late walker!
I know everyone will be saying, "He's not walking yet?" and it'll drive you crazy. It can't hurt to mention it again to the pedi again. Good luck!
If you adjust his age (I would still adjust despite the fact that he had little NICU time) he's about 9 1/2 months. I think that very soon here, I would expect to see him at least getting onto all 4's, even if he isn't crawling.
My son army crawled at 9 months adjusted with OT/PT, and was able to get on all 4's shortly thereafter.
Since it takes a while to get an eval, and if the eval shows he needs PT, it takes more time to get a PT in your home to start services, I would probably think about setting up an EI evaluation if you don't see him attempting to go on all 4's within a few weeks or so.
I wouldn't worry yet, but I would keep an eye on it. If you contact EI and get an eval you are not committed to anything, so that's why I think it's easier to contact on the early side before you are very worried/stressed about the situation, because at that point, waiting really sucks.
As far as what you can do in the mean time - make sure you are giving him as much tummy time as you can. Make sure you make him "work it out" if he is getting stuck in certain positions. Place favorite toys out of reach as an incentive.
Ladies, thank you so much for your encouragement and wisdom. He is very intellectual and musical. He loves "jamming" with his daddy. I think I will just keep a very close watch on him and give him a few more weeks and then contact his pedi for a consult if I am still having concerns.
I wanted to add FWIW Andrew didn't walk until 17-18 months adjusted (26 weeker) and nobody was concerned because that's within "normal". Now he is 27 months old and we're finding out the neurological issues (he had a 2 and 4 bleed) are resulting in low muscle tone, among other things. He is getting orthotics now and has no tone in his thighs or core. This is why it took him so long to walk and why he's still very unsteady and cautious.
While it is common and can be "normal" for preemie to be delayed, the reason I suggest being more proactive about getting evals is to detect issues like this sooner. I feel like we should have known this sooner than now. He's only 16 mo in gross motor, and typically that means fine motor is also delayed. Now we are scrambling to get him caught up to his peers for school. I think it's better to be more proactive. I'm not saying to worry, but this is why I suggested getting an eval in about a month or so.
