NBR: Dry scalp shampoo?

My scalp is SO dry.  I had my hair cut the other day and my stylist said everyone seems to have a dry scalp right now b/c of having such a harsh winter, however, I haven't had my heat on for awhile and this problem really just started the last week or so.  I've never had this problem before so I need a recommendation for a dry scalp shampoo, but I want something that will still be good for my hair.  I have very combination hair.  I have to wash it daily or I'll look greasy, but at the same time it can be very frizzy so I always have to flat iron it or I look a hot mess.

Re: NBR: Dry scalp shampoo?

  • Are you sure it's just dry?

I have psoriasis, and it mainly affects my scalp.  It appears to be dry and scaly, but the reality is that the scales happen because of over production of oil.

I have a shampoo for psoriasis (generic brand nizoral- prescription strength, but an OTC version does exist).   I also have 2 other scripts- one is a liquid application and the other is a peanut oil I put on with a shower cap.  The oil is a PITA because it takes 2-3 shampoos to get the oil out of my actual hair, but it works wonders for the scales.  All of the prescriptions come from my dermotologist.  Also, the "best prescription" is sunlight... which can cure a lot of things!   (ETA:  a little sunlight- 20-40 minutes without sunscreen... length of time depending on time of day)

Anyway, the best shampoo I've found for me is actually Suave Professionals.  Not only is it amongst the cheapest, but it also keeps the oil out of my hair and leaves my scalp feeling pretty good.   I also will use the Neutrogena deep cleansing shampoo every few weeks that seems to take out the excess crud.  I hope that makes sense.

  • We have switched to shampoo and conditioner with tea tree oil.  I've always had problems with dry scalp and spots of eczema and it's worked great.  We use Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Special in the summer and switch to Paul Mitchell Lemon Sage Thickening for the winter.

I have used this shampoo and conditioner for going on 13 years now I LOVE it and the way it smells and my GF buys it through her salon for me so I am not paying full price!
