Canadian Mommies and Maternity Clothes

This weekend was my first adventure into the land of Maternity clothes shopping. I come from a fairly small town, where the only option is Wal-mart (which has a tiny section) and an expensive local store. So because I was in the T.O. area I thought I would take advantage. To my surprise - several stores have eliminated their maternity sections!!! Old Navy Canada being one, and the Bay being the other. I went to Thyme Maternity, (didn't get a chance to get to Motherhood) loved their jeans but underwhelmed by the rest. At least I now know what size I am so that I can shop online - but man that was frustrating! I resorted to buying some flowy tops from regular stores

Any other Canadian ladies have tips on where to look for affordable maternity clothes?

  • Hi!

I'm also in Ontario and the selection here is minimal. There is Thyme, but absolutely nothing fits me there, all the jeans are too big & baggy even the smallest size.

I've had a ton of luck with Motherhood Maternity. They have slim fitting jeans, great t-shirts, blouses etc. Check out the Heidi Klum line- they have great options.

Also, my hairdresser said when she was pregnant, she shopped a lot at Sirens. They sell flowy, long, empire waisted stuff all the time. I went in for the first time this weekend and some items I bought can be worn until Im 9 months for sure!

Other than that, Im so dissapointed we don't have Old Navy, Gap or even a maternity section at the Bay! I'm curious to hear any other Canadian ladies chime in...

Thank you! I'm going to motherhood in 2 weeks and am looking forward to it! My saving grace so far has been smartset/suzy shier and other stores like that. The style seems to be flowy big tops which is nice - but not so much for the pants. And I found the pants at Thyme fit strange as well - I'm not their medium (fits now but not in a month from now), and i'm not their large (i'm swimming in them!) So hopefully Motherhood fits much nicer!

  • Smart Set and Suzy have some great tops now, aren't we lucky that the styles now are so flowy? Also try some dresses at Ricki's, they have very stretchy material and I bought a few empire waist, and also some cheapies at Fairweather.

I hope you like Motherhood, the store kinda seems disorganized so have an open mind, bu where I go, the manager is amazing and knows her stock so well, she always finds something to suit my body type. Keep us posted!

  • I too am from a small ontario town- luckily close to the american border.  I have recently ordered online from motherhood, and also from jcpenney (we have one that isn't too far from us in the states). I will let you know how everything is when it comes in.

  • I'm in Ontario and have had luck at Old Navy (my store still has a section, but it's small), Motherhood Maternity and Thyme. I haven't tried shopping anywhere else yet (i.e. Walmart, Zellers). My friend scored a huge lot of maternity clothes on Kijiji for $100, so I suggest checking there if you don't have a problem buying 2nd hand).

  • Our Old Navy doesn't have a materntiy section in it, but if I drive to Edmonton theirs does.

I bought a few things at H&M the other day - they have a small maternity section.

I checked out Walmart, but it was one pitiful rack and the sizing was wacky, even the extra small pants were too big for me.

Motherhood and Tyme are just so expensive.....I'm kind of at a loss.  I told DH we need to take a weekend trip to the States so I can do some maternity shopping!

I found with the pants at Thyme that you'll probably be surprised and they will fit a month from now.  They're pretty stretchy.  The girl warned me that I might hesitate because they seem like they'll get too tight, but they grow with you.  I haven't grown that much since I got them, but they do seem to be expanding with me.  I didn't like the pants at Old Navy, but their tops and dresses looked cute (haven't bought any yet 'cause I haven't needed new tops yet).

  • Our Old Navy in the Eaton Centre has a tiny section but the clothes are horrible.

H&M has a small section with the baby stuff.  I didnt try anything but I liked the looks of them.

I am planning to check out Motherhood or Thyme in the next few weeks.  I suppose you can always order from the US and pay shipping and duty.

  • I've only had luck at Thyme so far.

The only maternity clothes closer to where I live are Zeller's, and I hate shopping there for anything so I won't be buying clothes there. I need to drive into Winnipeg to get anything at all. I'm making one more trip into Winnipeg to use up some Thyme gift cards I hate, and then I think it's time for some online shopping. I've been checking out the Gap website, so I think that's the route I'll be going. Duty and taxes suck, but I'm only an hour drive form the border so I can always get it shipped to Border Services (a private local business) and pick it up there.

  • So far I have purchased Clothes from Motherhood and Thyme. Motherhood being my favorite!

The city next to mine, still has a Maternity Section in their Old Navy, but there is hardly any selection! There is very slim pickings in Canada for Pregnant Ladies! Not sure why!
