Success after IF

Surprise BFP and LOW progesterone

Tongue Tied

Hi ladies

I posted on the TTTC board and though I would post here for some more advice and encouragement.  The past week I have been spotting which is not normal for me since according to my OV Watch I was ovulating.  I decided to call my RE and had blood work done.  The results were not what I expected- HCG of 167 but progesterone of 2.27Sad Nurse told me that this is not a viable pregnancy and will most likely end in a miscarriage (my 3rd) or an ectopic (my 2nd) due to low progesterone.  The dr. decided he did not want to see me till next Wednesday but if I started to show signs of an ectopic to go to the ER.

Since I was not happy with this I insisted on being seen earlier than Wednesday.  So I went in yesterday, 2 days since last blood work and my HCG more than doubled- 456!  However, my progesterone was still 2.27 and dr. does not want to start me on any progesterone suppositories if this is an ectopic.  So now I sit and wait till Wednesday which is when they will do and ultrasound to see anything in my uterus.  If there is nothing in my uterus it will be deemed ectopic and i will be given shot of methotrexate.  If it is in my uterus then I will be started on progesterone.   BYW I am still spotting and have slight cramping.  Any adivce or experience with this?  Hope that pregnancy will last?

After 3 years, 2 ectopic pregnancies and 2 m/c, we finally conceived on our own!

Re: Surprise BFP and LOW progesterone

  • Let me just say that I am not a doctor but I personally think it is ridiculous for your doctor to just assume that it is an ectopic pregnancy. HCG levels on ectopics can do just about anything but they tend to be low and slow rising, and to me, yours doesn't sound like that. Is it possible for you to get another opinion, maybe with a primary care even? I'm sorry you're going through this and it makes me a little angry that your doc wants to give up on this pregnancy. It is most certainly not over.

  • Wow!!!  I'm kinda shocked that you didn't get progesterone supplements right away.  I've been around 3 yrs on botb, tttc, and saif and from my memory, I think everyong with a low prog. and a + hcg got supplements asap.

I do not understand why he thinks it's ectopic???  Do you have any pain?  your #s doubled perfectly, usually a great sign of a normal pregnancy.  If it were me....I'd call and insist on PIO shots or prog. suppositories today.

  • Oh, sorry, i see you said you had slight cramping--> totally normal and experienced by most of us early in pg.  The low prog. might be causing your spotting and the pio or prog. supp. would help that.
  • With my first pregnancy I had a lot of spotting/bleeding and they put me on progesterone supplements b/c my prog. levels kept going down instead of up.  With both pregnancies I had a lot of cramping early on.  With this pregnancy I started prog. supplements immediately and I haven't had any spotting so far.  You could always go to the ER and they will give you an u/s to see what is going on, if there is a sac in your uterus then I'd insist on progesterone supplements right away.  ((Hugs)) Sorry you are going through this, waiting it out is so hard.
  • I don't have any advice, but just wanted to wish you luck with everything!

  • I hate when drs/nurses jump to conclusions like m/c and ectopic.  Especially cuz that might not be true at all!  Also I hate when they make you wait so long!

I'm sorry, I have no advice, but good luck!

Married on 3.20.2004. It took 30 month, 2 failed adoptions and IVF for our first miracle. We have had 9 foster kids since he was born and started the domestic adoption process when he was 10 month old, we had 4 failed matches in that time. After our daughter was born we brought her home and spent 2 weeks fearing we might lose her because of complications that came up. But Praise God all went through and she is ours forever!
