Pregnant after a Loss

Anyone have trouble with dairy AFTER becoming PG?

Or certain types of dairy? I've had ice cream three times since I found out I was PG and each time I've had horrible stomach pains and diarrhea less than 2 hours after having it. The one time I had a sundae I also vomited alot. But cheese and yogurt has not bothered me at all. Just wondering if there is a connection. TIA!

Re: Anyone have trouble with dairy AFTER becoming PG?

  • It hasn't happened to me personally because I have some lactose intolerance, but I have a friend who became lactose intolerant while pregnant.  It can definitely happen.

Cheese and yogurt contain less lactase, so for some people it's not a problem.  I have some lactose intolerance issues, but I can eat cheese and yogurt with no problems.  I can't drink any milk at all, and ice cream sometimes causes problems for me too.

Thank you! I googled it and it sounds like some women do become lactose intolerant to all or some dairy while pregnant.  I wonder if this will effect my LO. Do you take any kind of extra calcium supplement?

  • You made me realize that I haven't been taking mine!  Although my prenatal vitamin has calcium in it, and I drink soy milk and eat cheese every day, so I do get enough calcium that way.  But yes, usually I take a calcium supplement.
  • Milk would make me vomit until about week 20 but I only used to drink skim milk and then I tried to drink whole milk after becoming pregnant because I was having difficulty gaining weight at first. I did not have a problem with ice cream though and I felt like I constantly craved cheese!!! I would just try to not overdue it on the lactose and maybe try it again later down the road and see if it is any better. I have deffinetly heard of a lot of people that report having this issue so you are not alone. There are also some low lactose or lactose free products out there that you could try if it keeps being an issue.

  • My best friend did. She never had trouble with dairy, and didn't even with her first pregnancy. But with her second baby, she developed an intolerance. After the baby was born, she was once again able to eat dairy as she had before pregnancy. :)

  • Thank you, ladies, for all the helpful info! My OB's receptionist told me to take a calcium supplement, but she didn't specify how much (it was a voicemail). I have a call with a nurse tomorrow and will ask her then.

  • I have been lactose intolerant my whole life, and I have more trouble with creamy dairy products (like whole milk, ice cream, etc.) than I do with things like a little bit of cheese.

Yogurt should be fine because it contains the enzymes your body needs to digest the lactose.  I also am fine when I eat frozen yogurt (might have to do with the lower fat content, and therefore less "creamy".) Kemps makes the best cookies and cream frozen yogurt that tastes just like ice cream.  And Ben & Jerry's makes a "Half Baked Fro Yo" that is declicious.
