poop help needed....

Gabe has not pooped in a week.   He is my chronic constipated guy...  pebbles, bunny turds, baseballs...  poor kid.    Its been a week (we think)

we've done : daily prunes (like been through multiple containers), upped fluids, we are on day 3 of miralax...   his toots are uncle fester-worthy, so when he blows its not going to be pretty.

I think some of this is now a pattern and we need to break it.   He's scared cuz it hurts, doesnt want to poop, holds it, it gets harder and bigger and hurts more (that sounds wrong...)

I am calling the pedi when they open, but Im about ready to try some glycerin suppositories or baby fleet enema.

Poor bunny is saying all week his belly hurts, and trying a ton at school...   nothing.

Re: poop help needed....

  • Magnesium Citrate. It's in the pharmacy section of the grocery store, over the counter. It comes in different flavors. With Luke we would use the lemon lime flavor and mixed a child size cup/glass of half Magnesium Citrate and half Sprite. I think the pedi said flat sprite, but I didn't do that. It should clear him out in 30 minutes. Luke would do this so often - hold (because he didn't want to stop playing, etc) and then hold because it hurts, that we just kept the magnesium citrate on hand.

Make sure he has plenty of fluids as well, because he can get dehydrated (when using the magnesium citrate).

    ETA:

    Usual Pediatric Dose for Constipation:

< 6 years: 0.5 mL/kg orally up to a maximum of 200 mL. May repeat every 4 to 6 hours until stools are clear.

  • I'm no help for immediate relief (sorry).

For longer term stuff do you think probiotics might help keep him more regular?  Florajen is awesome (like Cultulrelle but cheaper, it's behind the counter at the pharmacy because it has to be kept in the fridge).

Sorry Gabe's having problems and I hope you find him quick relief!

  • If it's turning chronic make sure your ped takes you seriously. My friends little boy has ended up in some therapy and seeing special doctors For his poop issues. He's been on miralax since he was probably one. He takes ex lax at higher than the adult dose and they Give him mineral oil every day in his yogurt. He got to holding it and being so stressed about poop that it damaged his bowels so he couldn't Really feel the need to poop. It's called something like encopheresis?? It's bad news. He just turned five and they see the lIght at the end of the tunnel now. Not trying to scare you about it. I just want to make sure your doc cones Up with a good solution that's long term to avoid him having longer term issues. Especially since you're trying to potty train too. My friends little boy didn't potty train til he was nearly five because of all of it. He's good now but it was a long haul.

  • Miralax has worked well for DS. If he misses a day though, it takes at least 3 days to see results again and he gets extremely uncomfortable.

When we first had to take him in for constipation, they did a mineral oil enema and a glycerin suppository and had him on 2 tsps of Miralax twice a day.  It STILL took him over 24 hours to poop.  We did the 2 tsps 2x a day for close to a week and then were able to cut back over time, but haven't been able to cut it out.

Miralax + apple juice or prune juice + prunes +as many raspberries/blueberries/etc as he'll eat and plenty of liquids should get things moving.  I wouldn't worry too much about potty training at this time - as a pp said, developing chronic constipation can be terrible for them and lead to serious potty difficulties that can last for years.  Most important is to get things cleared out and then regularly moving again.  Good luck!

  • We just did a glycerin suppository for Max last weekend as he had a couple days of straining but no production, and the usual prunes weren't doing the trick. It did help, I would give it a try.

We have the opposite problem, Max has chronic diarrhea. The pedi diagnosed him toddler diarrhea (which I have never heard of) and said to add fat to his diet. This seemed so counter intuative to me, but I will try anything. Have you tried to eliminate/reduce fat from Gabey's diet? I don't know if this will help, but if adding fat helps with diarrhea, maybe eliminating or reducing fat will help with constipation??

Also, luke warm or room temp water is supposed to be better for constipation than cool or cold water, limiting milk and milk products, adding probiotics like pp suggested. On the rare occasion that we have dealt with constipation, I add a whole container of Gerber pureed prunes to Max's apple juice and that does the trick fast, but that might just work for my kiddo.

And Also, are you potty training? My nephew holds it now because he doesn't like to poop on the toilet. This has led to some constipation issues. Apparently, this is common in boys.

Poor Gabey. I hope he feels better soon.

  • We have major constipation issues around here.  So much that Maeve has serious hard stools when she goes and some tearing.  Poor kid.  We use suppositories when she can't go and when we finally get it going we use miralax until there are no hard ones.  We are also on a no dairy diet for a few weeks to see if that's the culprit. It's a PITA but luckily she loves soy milk.

Definitely talk to your ped, but ours told us to use suppositories to clean her out and then miralax to keep it coming.  Plus we let her sit and play in warm baths as often as possible to relax and help her poor bum heal.  But word of warning, sometimes she gets really relaxed and goes in the tub.  Gross but at least she goes.

  • Certainly not to deal with a serious issue - but my friend swears by the fiber gummies for her little boy. G won't drink juice, but we have FiberOne pancakes often (all of us) and boy do those work - super tasty too!
  • Thanks all!   we had success tonight (out to dinner...of course)

and we will talk to the pedi about it...   right now we do most of what you all metioned...  we eat a fairly high fiber, whole grain low fat diet as a family (fast food never, pizza, red robin type as a treat) and he gets prunes every morning.  he loves them.  Audrey is my runny girl and we have done probiotics with her, and for her, eliminated dairy (intolerance) with an occaisional yogurt, cheese or ice cream (3-4x a month).    sigh...  we just need to be on top of it.

Luckily, he is totally potty trained (both are) except nights and naps.   But we had him in  a pull up today in case...   and he made it!

  • I have a friend who's dealing with rectal cancer and she's learned a lot about fiber and pooping.... one day she was telling us about the difference between soluble and insoluble fiber and how one I think actually constipates you even though you think more "fiber" helps things move.  I can't remember the specifics but maybe ask your ped about that too... maybe you'll need to cut back on some types of fiber?

Also make sure he's drinking enough liquids.... and I'm not sure if a low fat diet is good for toddlers yet... so maybe ask if a little more fat would help?

Will he eat black beans?  Those sure run through my kids.  :)

I'm late to the party and glad it's partially resolved but J gets Miralax every day in her morning milk - just a partial dose but it keeps everything moving. She once held it 2 weeks and after that we don't mess around anymore.  I would make sure he's getting plenty of liquids too.

  • I'm sorry for my dearest Gabers.....I love that child.

And I'd just like to point out that since you've learned all of this, you remain my Poop Go To Girl should I need help in the future.

    Love you Stick out tongue
