BFing mom's come in: Anyone else have a "lazy eater"??

For the past week or so, DS has wanted to eat every 1.5 hours, which makes getting things done around the house and finding a few moments to myself difficult considering he can nurse up to 45 minutes each time. He will fall asleep, rest, and "play" with my nips instead of eating!  In between feedings he was only content for about 10-20 minutes before becoming fussy again. Diaper changes, walking around and pacifiers did not help.

Today, I have been pumping and giving him bottles. He has been eating about 3-4 oz every 2-3 hours and seems to be a much happier baby. He has napped longer, pooped more, and when he is awake, looks around and makes all sorts of cute noises.

I am wondering if pumping and giving him bottles is the way to go? I still would like to BF a few times a day, but I am just concerned that he isn't getting enough that way.

Anyone else?

  • My lo did that for a while, but I never pumped and gave him a bottle.  I think it is a phase that babies go through.

If giving him a bottle give you peace of mind that he is getting enough to eat than go with it.

This - DS eats fairly often and frequently plays around but when he falls asleep I pull him off.

  • I give him bottles of BM, but that's because he wasn't gaining weight.  He is also a lazy eater, but he would barely take anything from the breast before he fell asleep.

  • We moved to BM in bottles almost exclusively a week ago because of this. I didn't think she was getting enough, especially at night when we'd have 4 hour sessions where she fed, we both fell asleep for 20 mins, woke up and started again. She now eats 4oz every three hours (more like 3.5-4 at night) and has even had a couple of 5oz feedings. Also, DH loves feeding her and putting her to bed and he can do that now.

  • My baby always falls asleep at the breast. We had to start supplementing with formula this week. I know I'm not supposed to, but I'm now giving him the bottle first and then bf'ing. The bottle helps keep him awake and has actually improved our bf'ing sessions.

  • yes, my LO does the same thing. I haven't started pumping yet- I am hoping he just gets better/quicker at feedings. I'm afraid if I pump now we'll end up EPing and not be able to BF.

  • My lc at the hospital said that if their arms relax, they've had enough on that side so that's what I gauge by. if you can move their arm around, its time to switch. Just stick your finger in to break the suction.
Baby, you've got the sort of eyes that tell me tales...

  • Sounds just like DD. I started pumping because of it, BF was taking too much time, and I was starting to be concerned I wasn't producing enough.  We are both much happier now.
  • my girl is the same. she was a slow nurser and always fell asleep in about five mins and then be hungry very quickly after. my nipples were sooosore soi started pumping. works better and i bf lightly about once or twice a day. i pump 6 times a day yielding about 6 to 9 ounces each time. i also freeze milk to start a stockpile for whenever i start working.
