Is a benadryl in the first trimester safe?

Hi i was wondering is it safe to take benadryl in the first trimester? my allergies are killing me, is it bad to take them?

Re: Is a benadryl in the first trimester safe?

  • Benadryl was on the 'safe to take' list that my doctor gave me.  I would take it if I were you.

  • Yep, safe whether for allergies, as a sleep aid, or to combat morning sickness. Some women with hyperemesis take several doses a day throughout their entire pregnancies.

My doc let me stayed on my Zyrtec, and chlorpheniramine maleate (Chlor-Trimeton) is on many safe lists too.

  • See, my doctor said no benadryl until the 3rd trimester bc it's considered a "b level" drug or something like that. He said Zyrtec is good though. I live on benadryl so this has been tough!
  • Benadryl is TOTALLY safe according to the FDA.  It is a category B (as is Zyrtec, claritan ect)..  If you need it then take it, I learned this after months of suffering trying not to take anything during first tri. As always talk to your doctor so you have piece of mind! Good Luck!
  • My doctor actually prescribed it to me for morning sickness. The military pharmacy gave it to me for free- so I'd like to think it's safe. :)

  • I think even if it's considered "safe." medications should be avoided whenever possible.  Have you tried a neti pot?  That's what I plan on using if my allergies get bad.

I LOVE MY NETI POT! :D Sometimes, it's just not enough. I'm allergic to Mulberry trees and there's 3 in my front yard. benadryl is COMPLETELY safe according to my pharmacist, but she said no zyrtec. So many people have different feelings on this, but i honestly think benadryl is fine.

  • The reason OB's caution against Benadryl and prefer Zyrtec is because Zyrtec is a 24 hour pill, so you only take one 10mg dose a day, where as with Benadryl you're taking 3-4 doses a day. However Benadryl has been out on the market FAR longer then Zyrtec and has never shown any kind of birth defect related to it's use. I say take what works for you. I get extreme nausea and drainage throughout my pregnancies, so I take any allergy pill that works even if it's class C, because the benefit outweighs the risks (if my drainage isn't kept under control I can't keep anything down, not even water because it triggers my nausea so bad).

  • It was on my safe list. The only thing is that benadryl makes me super tired, so I try to avoid taking it during the day.
