Using bathroom at preschool

Hi all -

My four-year-old is extremely shy and while he has been potty trained since 2 1/2 he will NOT ask to go at preschool.  He just won't raise his hand and speak up if he needs to go.  He has had only one accident at preschool b/c they have scheduled times in which all the kids are taken to the bathroom but I am worried b/c we are changing schools in the fall to a pre-k program (he misses the K cutoff) and I am worried that if they don't have a set time that he just won't make it through the morning.  He is fine at home and just goes whenever he needs to.  He doesn't ask or need to be told, he just goes.  We have talked repeatedly about him just telling the teacher if he needs to go but he absolutely refuses to do so.  I am not sure what to do about next year.  Is this a topic that I should bring up to his new teachers at the beginning of the year or just let it go and see how he does.  Does anyone else have a child who does this?  FWIW he also does not volunteer in class (raise his hand to answer a questions, etc.)  but will always speak up and answer when called upon...

  • I would talk to his new teachers about it when he starts there. Better that they are aware of it. My daughter was shy at first too but got over it quickly. Good luck.

  • I would talk to the teacher.  When DD started at her school this was a concern of mine as the director had told me on the tour that the kids have to ask to use the restroom so the teacher knows where they are.  When I spoke to the teacher about my concern, the teacher said the kids dismiss themselves to the bathroom on top of scheduled bathroom breaks.  The teacher leaves the bathroom door open at all times though, so I am not sure how this will pan out as she moves into the 4 y/o pre-K program.  I think how this is handled is largely dependent on the teacher.
