Moving advice needed! (NBR)

So, we officially are moving!

The military fell through with DH because he ended up with a GED and not a HS diploma. (He had gotten kicked out of his house at 17 and went the only route possible for him.)

So! We are heading to Az to live about 15 minutes from his mother. (Joy.)

I have never made this big of a move before, and have been making arrangements for about two weeks. But I feel like I am missing something!! Any ideas on what I should be doing? My mom and his mom are "letting us figure it out for ourselves" but I am super overwhelmed.

Completed/to-do list:

Set up a truck rental (done!)

Pack the house (half way, we still use some stuff)

Found a place for us to live (paperwork completed, MIL has keys)

Give notice for this apartment (done, inspection completed)

Cancel electric, internet, etc. (done, dates set for future)

Pay all remaining bills (waiting for them to come in the mail)

Forward mail with the post office (done, date set starting Tue)

What else should I be doing?

  • Sounds good!

  • Set up utilities at the new place.

Get your renters insurance transferred to the new place.

Figure out what you will need to do to get drivers licenses there and transfer your car registrations.

  • Jill had good ideas too.

I'm confused - the military has always accepted GED's as far as I've known.  Is that the reason they gave him?

  • I always thought they did too. With no other things needed.

They do still accept them, but you have to have 15 college credits to back them up. I am assuming that this is because of the high interest in joining the military at the moment.

It would not be a problem, but the reason for him joining was to be able to better provide for our family since financially we are really struggling. We cannot afford school at the moment, so they told him to try again later.

I was confused too but I googled it.  Apparently they have a limit on how many GED people they will accept because on average the high school drop outs also drop out of basic training?  And so if you have college credits you're counted the same as a high school graduate and can enter...

    Exactly.

My brother, sister, and brother in law are all in the military but we had never heard of this "rule".

DH is so frustrated with it because he was not a "drop out". He just lost the means to get to school when his family situation was turned upside down. I am just glad that he took the time to immediately get his GED, and actually graduated ahead of his class.

  • Notify your financial institution(s) of your new address and the date it will be effective.  Out-of-state purchases can be a red flag for fraud otherwise, especially if large expenses from moving would be involved.

Change address with your cell phone provider and make sure there is decent coverage where you are moving.

If you were born here in WA, you might want to get copies of your birth certificates if you don't have them yet - I have heard that sometimes it's not as easy to get them once you're out of state (don't know that from experience, though).

  • Thanks for the advice!

I would have never thought of those until something went wrong.

I am NOT looking forward to being in a car for so long. But at least we are stopping often to visit family on the way.
