i have registered for one of these but are they really a necessary item? does anyone have one and absolutely love it or is it just another gimmick that takes up space?
DD loves hers. She sits in it every morning while DH reads her stories. You don't necessarily need the Bumbo, but having something for baby to practice sitting up in is a good idea. There is a Summer Infant seat that a lot of people love.
We had one given to us, but by the time we got it, DS only used it for about 3 weeks before he learned to sit up on his own. Maybe we'll try it earlier next time? I'm glad I didn't have to pay for it with how little we used it!
I think they are somewhat useful. DD can tolerate it for about 10 minutes then she wants out. They have a very short life span. Once they can "pop" out of it, you should ditch it.
i personally wouldn't spend that much money on one new, but if you're gifted it or find a cheap one on craigslist i think they're a GREAT buy
i wish i would've had one for my first 2 kids. my dd sat in hers frequently. she liked to watch me cook while sitting in it. i took it with us to the park, b'day parties or other places where she'd have to sit on my lap for an extended amount of time.
she used it from when she had head control, 4 mos or so up to 6mos or a little past.
even though she could sit up on her own at 6mos, i still found it useful for keeping her in one place when i needed to
as long as you're not leaving baby in the bumbo for hours at a time, they should be ok

We decided it wasn't something we would spend $40 on, but we got a used one with a tray for about $10. If the baby only uses it for a couple of weeks thats fine

I regsitered for it. DD hated it and we rarely used it. I see them at the consignment shops all the time. Maybe try that instead of registering for it.
I didn't think it was necessary but I was gifted one a week ago (total surprise, I found it on my front porch). It was funny how many people asked if I registered for one b/c they wanted to buy it b/c they loved theirs. I told them that it was too much money and I didn't see the point in it. Well, we got one anyway so I am excited to use it!
I have NEVER heard any bad research on them, I have actually heard just the opposite. However, I have heard that Bumbos don't work well with chunky babies.

I've seen some conflicting research on how they can affect a baby's development, so I'm choosing to stay away from the Bumbo.
Would you mind sharing what you found? just curious, havent' heard anything either way about it before.
Google "Bumbo bad", you will see an array of articles and opinions.
lol, well that's a pretty biased google search!
i didn't see any professional opinions about the bumbo and development, just some blog reviewers reviewing the product.
eta, not trying to flame or anything, i actually was just curious if there's any medical opinon on it, or something more substantial then just bloggers
even what i could find from aap, was just not to sit it on high surfaces (which i did anyway... SUPERVISED!)

Haven't seen anything official either way, just a bunch of differeing opinions, which you would get if you googled "Bumbo good or bad" (if you want to take out the bias).
It was enough to turn me off, I didn't need a full blown medical case made for it. That being said, I know alot of moms use them and love them.
We have one. A lot of moms opt to use one for when babies can eat sitting up for the first time. I think you can get a tray attachment??? Like a precursor to a highchair. At least one of these type of seats you can. DS only tolerates it for a little bit though. Like the PP said, about 10 minutes. It's good when I need to clean out the dishwasher or start dinner and want to have him in sight.

I wouldn't spend $40 on it though!!
This, thankfully we had one given to us from a friend
