May 2011 Moms

working moms - when are you starting maternity leave?

I'm planning on working all the way up to when I go into labor (unless my doc tells me not too, of course.) I think it's starting to freak out my co-workers, because they keep asking me about when I'm going to start my leave. There's a part of my that wouldn't mind having some days off before the baby comes, but I only get 12 weeks, and if baby's late, I'll lose that time at the end.

Re: working moms - when are you starting maternity leave?

  • Because of the physical nature of my job, I am stopping at 36 weeks. California State Disability allows you to take 4 weeks prior to your due date off. I really hope the baby doesn't come too late, I don't want to miss any of my time off after, either.

  • My situation is a bit different, since I am a teacher and school gets out on June 15th. I am planning on stopping work on April 29th (May 2nd is my first maternity leave day.) I am due May 17, but my original date was May 9th. So once I am done, I am done for the school year.

As of now, I have enough energy to keep up traveling between two schools and working with kindergarten, first and second grade; but I don't have energy for anything else. The doctor asked me at my last appointment how many contact days I have left with them--because in the last two weeks I have been exposed to Fifth's disease 20 times, Strep 5 times and the stomach bug about 12. Luckily, all I ended up with was a cold!

  • I would love to stop now!!  However when I told my pricipal I was pregnant, I did tell her I would work up until the end.  My due date is the 12th, kind of thinking I will end on the 6th but then again, I need to give out a major state test to my class on the 10th and of course the 12th!  I don't know what to do, I am torn!  Part of me is hoping that my doctor will tell me in the next week or 2 that I need to stop working!  I am on vacation this week so I guess I will have to wait and see!

  • I am going to work up until my due date (May 6th). If she comes before then obviously I'll be out. If she comes after then I'll be using sick time until I deliver. Then I'll have 6-8 weeks short term disability to get me to the summer. I am a teacher and I chose not to teach summer school this year.

  • I was supposed to go out this upcoming Tuesday @36w, but got sidelined with a really nasty sinus/upper respiratory infection and my OB put me out at 34w2d. There's no way I could have worked for the last 2 weeks-PG or not and I'm still not better at this point.

  • I'm hoping to work up until I deliver.  I feel good and I want to spend as much of my PTO with my baby.
  • I have worked up until my due date with all three kids. I have had a few days off here and there for problems

  • This time I am working up until my due date, or sooner if she wants to come sooner.  But only because of daycare, that way I gave them an exact date of when DS will be done.  However, when he was born the plan was to work until I went into labor.  However, this time around I learned not to schedule myself for things really close, like meeting and out of office things and such.  I did last time and ended up going early and it was a pain for my coworkers to have to make up for my absence.  I think this week upcoming is the last I have anything scheduled.

  • this Thursday, and I can not wait!  My technical first day of leave is the 28th of April, which is when the ob has me at 36 weeks, but since the 21st is the start of spring break for my school, I am reaping the benefits a week early :-).

Since I am a teacher, I have a different ability with my leave... I do not go back until November 14th.  6 months off...woohooo.

  • my last show opened this week, so I've technically started my leave as of Wednesday. But I still have strike to attend this Easter (Ugh!) Sunday at 7. Then I'm home free for 2 months.
  • I started at 37 weeks, I stand on my feet all day and it was getting painful. Also I don't get paid for my leave so it doesn't make a difference to me.

  • April 29th is my last day.  I'll ne 37 weeks 1 day.  I drive a lot since I am in sales and it will just be too uncomfortable in the car.  Then I will take of 12 weeks and most likely go back to work August 19th unless the delivery date changes.

  • My employer doesn't have paid Mat. Leave, so I am planning on working until I go into labor. I'm just hoping I don't go into labor at work....
    ...
  • I was planning on working up to my due date, but I live in CA where we get State Disability during pg, in addition to the 12 weeks after, so my Dr. recommended I stop 4 weeks before my due date. I agreed on 2-3 and Friday could have been my last day, but I'm going to stick around until next Friday (2 weeks before my due date).

I have a high stress job and work has been absolutely crazy so I feel like I really need that two weeks to finish prepare for baby (mentally and physically) because I've been too busy with work to do all of the things I want to. I really hope he doesn't come early!

That being said, if it was going to cut into any of my bonding time with baby, I would absolutely work until I went into labor and I feel like if I had a normal 8-hr/day job or I took it easy, I could definitely do that. My work requires once a week travel and my Dr. said no traveling out of the county after 36 weeks, so I'm already limited to what I can do.

  • Working up to my due date. Although, as long as I make it through this week I should be good to go.  I'm in school and after this week, there will be 6 weeks left then summer.  If I make it to my due date then I will only miss 3 weeks.
  • April 28th is my last day.  I'll be almost 37 weeks.  I teach and my principal and I decided that they didn't want me going on field trips and things that close to my due date.  I'm really glad we decided that now after my dr's appointment this week.  She said she doesn't think I will make it much longer and I don't want to be the lady that goes into labor in front of her first graders!

  • I'm going off after next week, which is 38 weeks.

I'm taking 2 weeks vacation / misc. leave, then going on maternity at my due date. I have a full year off, so taking two weeks now for my personal comfort and because I really don't care about work any more is perfectly fine with me. If I only had 6-12 weeks to work with, I would probably make another choice.

  • My original plan was to take off one week before my due date, but then when I looked at my school calendar I realized that once I come back from spring break it would only be 4 more days until one week prior to my due date.  I decided to go out at 37 weeks instead (my last day was Friday), but my first official day off from work is April 26th and my due date is May 6th.
  • Last day of work april 29, due May 2nd! lol!

  • My leave officially starts 4/25, but I'm a teacher and am on Spring Break this week, so actually at 37 weeks, rather than 38. Due May 6-ish, but will probably have scheduled C-section the week before. I was so exhausted that I had to go out a little bit earlier than most.
  • I went off at 35 and a half weeks.

  • I worked right up until I delivered my DS at 39 weeks, and I plan to work all the way to my RCS date this time too.

I don't do well just sitting around my house twiddling my thumbs, so I figure I might as well be working.

  • This. At my job (I'm a hospital nurse) we get 12 weeks maternity leave that starts on the day your LO is born. So unless my dr. makes me cut back or stop working I will be working hard until the day I go into labor. I personally have felt like having my physically demanding job has made my pregnacy easier so I really hope nothing gets in the way of me working til the very end.

  • I'm stopping on April 27th and my due date is May 1st.  The latest I will go without induction is 41 weeks. I hope I don't go late though, as I only have 12 weeks off.

  • Tomorrow is my last day of work and MAT leave officially starts on the 23rd.  I'll be 37&1/2 weeks and I feel good about it.  I stand and walk all day at work and in my opinion being home resting will keep this baby in longer.

  • I planned to work until May 6 (2 days post-due date).  I don't want to waste any of my 12 weeks on pre-baby time off.  That said, the big boss at my company pulled me aside and said that I can take off early and they wouldn't count it against my 12 weeks. Especially since I have such a long commute.

Since I don't want to overburden the coworkers taking over my responsibilities, I'm going to see about working from home every other day starting the week of my due date, and going into the office on the other days.

  • I am going to work right until I go into labor.  I only get 12 weeks off so I don't want to waste any of it before the baby gets here!

  • I was planning on working up to my due date which is May 7th.  On April 1st, I had some complications and was hospitalized overnight and MD has not wanted me to return to work since.  It's probably best for LO, but it's frustrating to me since I can only have a total of 13 weeks off.  I feel like I'm waisting time....UGH.

  • I planned on taking 2 weeks of vacation prior to delivery but it's hard to predict delivery date.  My plan going into last week was to work half-time but I got sick Sunday night and by Thursday I was admitted to ante partum.  I was released Saturday and am on bedrest so I'm on leave.  If I need more time with LO on the back end then I'll use the PTO I was planning to use now.  Hoping since I'm term and she's measuring so big that the doc will take me this week.  I'm having claustrophobic panic attacks and I truly believe that after dealing with pre-e she's better off out of me than in me.

  • My plan has been to work up until I go into labor, barring any issues, since I only get unpaid time off for maternity leave.  But frankly, I don't know if I'm going to make it that long.  My job is stressful and deadline driven and I just don't want to be there anymore.  Since my MW will induce at 41 weeks, I may just call it on my due date (may 16) and go out.  We have been relentlessly busy for months with our house, so the thought of relaxing and having a little downtime to get everything all settled sounds really nice.

  • The plan is to start maternity leave leave May 2 at 39 weeks, if LO does not make an early appearance. I am so ready to begin my leave, but my salary is much better than what disability pays, so I am hanging in there for now. I will see how much longer my doctor thinks I should continue commuting and working tomorrow.
