Has anyone ever had this done? How often should it be done?
We have been in our home (built in '72) for 3 yrs now. We have never done it and who knows if it was done before. Plus we have a super sheddy dog.
Anyone in ROC have a rec? There's an ad in the clipper this week from home air solutions for $60 which includes 8 vents, 1 return, 1 main line (no idea how many vents we have although I could walk around and count). Additional vents and dryer vents are extra.
Re: Air Duct Cleaning
We just had it done and I'm so glad we did. Our house was always so dusty and it's not anymore. I believe we'll reduce our heating bills too. We use to have to keep the house at 70 during the day to not feel cold- like 70 degrees and still bundled in sweatshirts, warm socks, etc. Now we keep it at 65 and sometimes 66- but that seems "hot" to us. It's strange!
The one thing I will tell you is to really do your research on whatever company you use. Apparently, many companies advertise air duct cleaning but few actually do it the "right" way. Most of the companies will just come in and kind of stir up the dust- not really taking it away or doing anything to help you. We used Indoor Air Professionals (they may travel to ROC, call them!) and they actually brought in a tank to remove the stuff- they sanitized the insides of our air ducts and even showed us what they were taking out. They recommend it every 3-5 years. Our house is a small cape, 12 vents and I think they charged us $480. This included them cleaning out our dryer vent as well. They were able to get us in the day after I called. They were in an out in 2-3 hours.
They did a special report on our local news about the cheap offers in the clipper ad being a scam. They company that ended up fixing the problem was like $500.

Thanks ama!
And thanks to everyone else too! I had absolutely no idea and was just like "oh, $60 isn't bad, maybe we should have this done." I do think we should get it done, but for sure want to do it correctly. I had no idea the normal prices, so didn't even realize that this one is probably no good.
Yep! They were great!
We had ours done 2 years ago by the local company that services our furnace and AC. Our house was built in 1960, and had definitely never been cleaned. It cost about $400, but is good for about 7-10 years. The guy that did it said that if we had more animals or bigger animals (we only have a cat), it would be better to do it more often.
I haven't noticed a huge difference in air quality, but our energy bills went down a little bit. Some really interesting stuff ended up in the bags when they were done (newspaper, toys, instruction sheets).
Have an estimate done first, and see what type of system they use to clean the vents. The one our company used was very high-powered with a special filtration system. Other companies may just use the equivalent of a shop-vac to clean vents.
$960 is about right- we paid $480 or so and our house is only 1200 sq ft. I believe our price was for the lowest package they have.
Ours is about 1500 sq ft, so at least that gives me an idea of what they will charge. I'll have to talk it over with dh. Approx $550 compared to $60 like I originally thought, we will have to decide if we want to push it off a bit or not. I know he won't like spending that money when we will still have the dog here making it dirty again right away. But, on the other hand he is the one with allergies so he should want it done.
DH says if you don't know of the last time it was done and especially if you have pets, you should get it done. And then every 10yrs or so they say to have it done.
Everyone seems to have meantioned Indoor Air Professionals, and that's who DH says is the best in our area. They do free estimates. If you call up my DH's company: Crossfield HVAC (585) 872-4420 and ask for a referall to a company that does duct cleanings, they'll tell you about them and he said sometimes they'll give you a discount! (maybe try that!?)
