My mother was an orphan. Her mother was an alcoholic & died of it when my mother was 8 years old. (Think episode of ER w/ George Clooney & he bleeds out & dies. Thats how my grandmother died.)
Anyway when my mother was 2 yrs old she went to the orphanage. She just got her records in the mail this week. The medical documents stated that at 2 yrs old she was 18lbs!!!!!!! Can you imagine? She had to be fed once an hour till she gained a normal body weight. They stated that she was mentaly & physically retarted due to malnutritian. She jabbered on like a baby, didn't speak any words clearly & clung to one of the Nuns tightly the whole time. The orphanage was run by nuns.
As she read this to me it brought tears to my eyes. Not only because it was my mother who went through this but because any child went through it.
What kills me about this is that my great grandmother was around. Knew that my grandmother was no good at taking care of her children, my aunt & uncle where in the orphanage at this point already, & she waited 2 years to do anything.
I'm just so thankful to the nuns that took care of my mother & saved her life.
