Visiting a 1st time mom

Hi ladies,

I usually post on TN but had a BR question so thought I'd pop over here. Friends of ours just had a baby. We probably won't be visiting them for a couple weeks, but I feel like we should bring something. What did you want/need a few weeks after you came home w/ the baby? I know the usual, like meals, diapers/wipes, etc, but is there anything that no one brought that you would've really liked? Or something different that was really great?

TIA!

  • A chnce to shower and get away for an hour-dont get me wrong I love being with my baby but my mom came over for a few hours to let us shower, nap, and we went out to grab lunch and run some errands.  we were only gone an hour but we felt like new people...now if you dont feel comfortable with that I got a few nursing tanks/tops from a friend and DH got body wash.  It was nice someone brought us something to feel a bit human since we're been getting lots of baby stuff.  They also brought an outfit for the baby.  Anything you do will be greatly appreciated.

  • After a couple weeks, they are probably squared away on meals - unless you actually BRING food to make dinner or lunch, etc. You know what would be nice at that point - is maybe bringing something cute/comfy for the mom to wear - like a cute hoodie or cardigan or cute flips flops/earrings, etc. something simple/everyday, but cute and not "mom" related.  Also - maybe like a bath product - like a nice soap or scrub, etc. just a little something "nice" to inject into her day.

And, of course a regular present for the baby.

  • I agree come ready to watch the baby for a minute. That was the best thing all our friends did. I would also come with some quick foods, like Panera or something. I would call and ask if there is anything she's been meaning to run to the store and get. In the first couple weeks I needed all sorts of random things.

  • My favorite things to get were a pack of diapers, any type of food-even a month after we had him, it was still nice to not have to cook one night!. My one friend came over with a bag of groceries and made me homemade pizza which was great. Also my other friend brought me a couple of nursing tanks which I thought was really sweet since most people bring stuff for the baby. Just nice to know someone is thinking of the mom too!

  • I had a really hard time keeping myself fed at first. I totally underestimated how hungry nursing made me. I would have appreciated a basket of healthy snacks like cheese, nuts, and dried fruit, things I could have on hand, but wouldn't need to prepare.

I agree with this- I got an edible arrangement and having a healthy snack I could eat while nursing was amazing.

I agree with bringing dinner with you too. I had a friend bring pizza with her and my stepmom brought a home cooked meal in toss away containers. Both were great.

  • Meals and healthy snacks are nice, as are gift cards to get takeout.  But what I wanted most was an hour to shower and take a nap!

  • Thanks for the great suggestions! We (ok me more so than DH) definitely feel comfortable babysitting/watching the baby for awhile, so I think we'll do that, but throw in some other stuff too.
