First finger foods

Hi everyone!  I haven't been on in a while, hope you are all doing well!

When did you first begin puffs and the like with your LOs?  Noah has begun eating solids and he loves them!  He likes oatmeal with banana and all the stage 1 veggies, and we are starting fruits now.  He watches us eat and I swear, he wants to have whatever we are having - he totally watches the food go from the plate to our mouths and licks his lips and stuff!

I was thinking it would be nice to be able to give him puffs or wagon wheels or something like that while we are eating - but when I looked at them in the store, it says that LO should already be crawling, and he obviously isn't doing that yet.  I can't remember now when we started this stuff with Ellie, so wondering if anyone else has any input?  Am I trying to move too fast?

Oh - and he has his two bottom teeth and is going to get the two top ones any day now.  TIA!!

Re: First finger foods

  • I think 6 months is a little too early for finger foods. Even though he has his teeth, he doesn't know how to use them yet. Plus, he may not be able to pick up small pieces and put them in his mouth at this point. I would say 9 months.

  • We started at 7 months with DD. She isn't crawling yet, but can pick up the puffs and get the mum-mums into her mouth. When I first started I would break her off a small piece so she wouldn't choke and it would be small enough to dissolve. Then a couple days later gave her whole puffs and she loves them. She only has the two bottom teeth, but mashes the puffs with her gums.

  • I am a bad mommy.  I have been giving finger food since 6 months.  His first was a cracker.  (Hangs head in shame.)  He was able to figure out how to hold it between his gums, pull down and snap it off in his mouth and then he would waller in around in his mouth until it dissolved.

  • If he's making all the "hungry" motions, then go for it!

Personally, I didn't like the Wagon Wheels... they were really hard compared to puffs or mum-mums.

  • We started around 7 months with the puffs and then moved to cheerios once he was better with the pincer grip and could eat them on his own. Another thing, though, is that Victor didn't have his first two teeth until around then, either. So since yours has teeth already, I say why not since he won't learn to feed himself unless he gets the chance. Just know that it may take some time and you should still feed him before giving him the puffs at mealtimes so that he doesn't get frustrated and super hungry. GL!

  • I think we gave M puffs from 8 or 9 months.
  • I think we started around 8 months with finger foods. I started with mum mums, then moved onto cheerios and puffs. Mum-mums are one of her favorite things still.  I just gave her a wagon wheel for the first time today.

  • We did Baby Led Weaning (BLW).  That means that at 6 months (5 3/4 actually) we started giving DD holdable foods to eat.  We just didn't do cereals/purees.  She was eating toast, scrambled eggs, firm tofu, fresh mozzarella, cheddar, 1/2 fresh peach, nectarine, slices of watermelon, and more.

If you are interested at all in BLW check out the Guidelines or the leaflet here: https://www.rapleyweaning.com/  And to check out pics of babies doing it check out the Facebook page, click on a photo then just keep on clicking - it's very inspiring! https://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2855840155

  • DD#1 started on puffs and cheerios at 6 months because she wouldn't touch baby food. DD#2 loves baby food and I'm just starting to leave a few puffs on her tray to see if she'll pick them up and put them in her mouth and she's 7 months. If he's showing interest, makes chewing motions and can pick them up and get them in his mouth, I say go for it.
