Baby Names

So....what is it?

We have decided on the name Julian Charles for our little boy. I know that I just need to get a little tougher-but it's so hard to deal with the comments!  People keep asking me if Julian is a boy's name and pronouncing it as J-I-L-L-I-A-N.  I don't get it!

We are not changing the name-but I think I need a little encouragement today to deal with the comments.

I know I just have to realize that everyone will have their own opinion and I just need to deal with it-but any suggestions?

Thanks guys-

  • I love the name Julian! I don't even think of Jillian. No worries, they're the weirdos! ;)

  • not really much u can do but correct them, smile, and keep it moving. also realize this won't be the last time on your course of motherhood where people offer unsolicited advice. (so i've heard). someone told me today that my baby's name sounded like an old woman. I simply said "thanks for your opinion"....and walked away.

    hang in there!

  • Thanks guys-not sure why everyone else seems to understand and my family doesn't!  At least I know we aren't crazy!

I just wanted to tell you I love your name choice as well. Eden was on my list if our LO had been a girl. Also, Elizabeth is my sister's name and we are close so I'd love to use it for a middle name some day.

    thanks so much :)

  • Congrats on deciding!  Julian Charles is a great name.  People are crazy if they pronounce it Jillian...but like the PP said, all you can really do is correct them.

  • Julian is my first choice as well, but DH says it sounds feminine. He wants Alexander. We'll see.

My mom pronounces it JOOL yan , not Joo Lee uhn, like we might, and I think it sounds more masculine her way. Just a thought.

  • Very nice name! I'm convinced people can butcher even the simplest of names...
  • I love Julian!  I think there are some perfectly good names that people will just mishear no matter what.  My name is Juliet (okay, it's a little narcissistic that I like Julian), and if I do not place huge emphasis on the last syllable, people hear it as Julia.  This is annoying, but I wouldn't want to be named anything else.  Julian is so much better than all the trendy names out there today - bring it on and people will get used to it!

  • Haha....sorry I'm no help.  My daughter's name is Gabrielle I get so many people calling her "Gabriel" and telling me it's cool he has a "unisex" name.  Umm no!!  Totally different.  I didn't think this would be an issue but it seems to be.  I have gotten used to it and am pround she is named Gabrielle....it just surprised me that I have to regularly correct people.  Julian is a great name but you have to correct some people.  It seems these days if your kid isn't named Emma or Ethan people don't know what to do.
  • I really like Julian. People really need to learn to be more gracious about sharing opinions like that (sadly, they won't, but in a perfect world, haha... ).
  • I know a little boy named Julian, and it's a great name. How do people not understand that it's a boy name?
