Pumped BM at room temp question

I pump and store my BM in the fridge. Would it be safe for me to take a serving of BM out of the fridge and keep it on my nightstand to feed DS his first feeding of the night. I usually take a bottle out of the fridge and heat it to about room temp anyway (while DS cries and screams) and my book says that BM can be left at room temp for 4 hours. Would there be a problem with leaving it out to save time for the first night feeding?

Re: Pumped BM at room temp question

  • I did that without issue when DS was first born and eating every 2-3 hours.

  • I believe the "at room temp time" is BM that has just been pumped not BM that has been already chilled

Thats what I figured, but I couldnt find any numbers on how long chilled BM could be kept at room temp. I figure that since its chilled, it would last a bit longer, but I know DS will have me up in less than 4 hours anyway.

  • I routinely take a bottle of pumped milk with me on errands - that she usually sleeps through so I end up giving her the bottle when we get home - making it out at room temp (never warmed up though) for 3-4 hours....no problems here...

  • We've done this several times and my LO has taken the bottle without issue. The milk smelled fine and we didn't have to heat anything up since she's ok with room temp milk.
  • I would agree with PPs. We have heated a bottle of BM that was in the fridge and kept it at room temp for a few hours following and gave to DD. She took with no problems. I don't see it as a problem.

  • I thought it would be ok, but I just wanted to double check. Hopefully I can get a little more sleep tonight!

  • This is actually exactly how we operate at night... I read on Kellymom or LLL that it can actually stay out from 8-10 hours if the room is cool enough (60-ish degrees). I always smell it before I feed it to DD, and when our room is that cool, it's absolutely fine that long. I only had to dump bottles when the room was up to near 70.

We always bring a bottle up at night (either freshly pumped or from the fridge) and leave on the nightstand. DD gets that at midnight, then I pump right after that feeding... I get two bottles worth from pumping, so we leave those on the nightstand for the 3am and 5-6am... then I pump again at the 5-6am feeding.

    STM due Feb. 2017!
  • BM is good for 6 hours at room temp (6 days in the fridge and 6 months in the freezer).  This is what most docs/nurses tell you but I've heard BM is actually ok up to 8 hours art room temp.  We used to just make and 8 oz bottle and keep it out for 6 hours and then throgh it away if after 6 ours there was some left, and replace it with a new 8 oz bottle. We have been EP until resently switching to formula.
