Houston Babies

at the beginning of your pregnancy.....

i just have to ask- did any of you go to the doctor at 5 or 6 weeks and weren't able to see the baby on the ultrasound?

i don't think i went till 7 or 8 weeks and could see just the little speck.

p.s. no, i am NOT pregnant. this baby making machine is closed. it's for someone else.

Re: at the beginning of your pregnancy.....

  • I've never been before 7-8 weeks along. Tell your friend just to wait if possible. I know there are several places that give free pregnancy tests and ultrasounds if you know where to look.

  • I think this question is kinda tricky unless the person is 100% positive that she is 5 or 6 weeks along. I was doing fertility treatments and was positive that I was 5 weeks along when I had my first ultrasound. We were lucky we could see the baby (which looked like a speck) and the heartbeat.

    Good luck to your friend.

  • well- she went this week- she should be right around 6 weeks. (my doctor told us they don't even see us until 7-8 weeks) and they saw the sac but not the baby... they're sending her to the hospital tomorrow for another ultrasound and to do blood work for viability? she's a wreck. i am too....

  • With DD I didn't have an u/s until 8 weeks, but she was definitely visible.

With this pregnancy, I had my first u/s at 6 weeks, and we saw both babies and heartbeats.

I hope all is well with your friend. Hang in there....

  • The big question is what are her HCG levels and are they doubling every 48-72 hours, typically you aren't going to see much of anything until levels are well over 1000.   She could have implanted late and any number of things.

My last pregnancy (obviously didn't end well but not because of any of this) we didn't see anything other than a sac at about 5-6 weeks and a week later we were able to see a baby and heartbeat.  I measured a week behind at every u/s, meaning a late implant.

Also, I have a friend who swears her levels were 20,000 and they didn't see a baby on u/s but she was pregnant and had a healthy baby in the end.

What was the reason they did a u/s so early?

  • I had multiple ultrasounds very early with my first.  In the first ultrasound we could only see the line thickening.  The second ultrasound we could see the sac.  At the third ultrasound we finally saw a hearthbeat.  After my 13 week ultrasound they moved my due date up a week, so I was not off with my dates.

They did check my HCG levels.

Hopefully everything is fine and they will see a heartbeat very soon!!

  • I went in at 5 weeks and all we saw was the sac. By the next month, there was a more obvious (to me anyways) start of a baby. I wouldn't worry too much, it's probably just a little early.

  • We saw the sack at 5 weeks with both babies...it's kinda hard to see much of a baby at that point.  We saw the flickering heartbeat at 6w3d with both of them.
  • Yep.  I went in at what I was sure I was 6w1d and all we saw was the yolk sac.  I was devastated as I was positive of my dates.  I went back a week later and the baby was there with a heartbeat measuring around 6 weeks.  I still thought something must be wrong because there was no way I was only 6 weeks.  I had a happy, healthy baby boy.
  • I also had fertility treatments, so I knew exactly how far along I was.  I had my first u/s at 5wks and I was lucky enough to see the sac, a spec and the flicker of a heartbeat.  But, I also had a vaginal u/s.  I am not sure if your friend had that, but it makes a difference.

     I wish her luck!

  • With my first pregnancy, we only saw the "dot" and the doctor said there should have been more to see. I was almost 5 weeks.  I had a miscarriage...never got to the heartbeat stage.

With this pregnancy, I went to the doctor before I was five weeks along and we saw the "dot" on the u/s (I think I was barely four weeks).  I went back at five weeks and could definitely see more.  We saw the little speck of a heart beating during the sixth week.

I had weekly appointments and ultrasounds until about 12 weeks, and have gone by-weekly since then.  He only stopped doing ultrasounds after the anatomy scan at 18 weeks.  This is NOT normal, I just had complications that we had to keep an eye on!

Some doctors won't see you until 8-12 or will only do blood work before then.

  • I had an ultrasound right at 6 weeks and saw the flickering heartbeat. My doctor warned me beforehand that we may not see anything since it was so early. She usually doesn't do ultrasounds until 7-8 weeks but I was spotting and having some complications.

  • I remember being warned with my first at 6 weeks that it could be too difficult to see anything on the u/s; possibly she is just not as far along as she thinks? I hope she gets good news at the follow up.
  • I had an ultrasound at 6 weeks and could only see 2 sacs...no heart beat or anything. By 8 weeks there was a strong heartbeat.
  • I had my first u/s at 5w1d (internal of course) and we were able to see the sac, a spec for the baby, and the little flicker (could even hear the little heart w. the internal u/s).

I was shocked you could see it all that early. It was very cool.

  • I should also note that all of my u/s up to 15w were internal.  That's how we were able to see stuff so early.
  • My Dr saw me at 6 weeks (or so we think so far) mainly to confirm the pregnancy test and give me information- I go back in 2 weeks for my first blood work and U/S.  So I'm guessing it's not uncommon for things not to show that early.  I think that's probably why many drs won't even see you that early...
