Crib/Bed Questions

I'm starting to think about items we'll shop/register for.  Are convertible cribs truly that useful?  It seems like they all end up converting to a full size bed which we won't be doing due to space issues.  I read in the Baby Bargains book that when they convert into toddler beds they're pretty pointless because most kids go from a crib to a twin bed.  Has anyone gone through these phases or is anyone familiar with what works?  If we could get away with a couple of plain Ikea cribs for around $100 that don't convert if the conversion stuff is fairly pointless I would rather do that.  TIA!

Re: Crib/Bed Questions

  • None of my friends have used the converter cribs past the crib stage - they just went out and bought twin sized beds after they graduated from the crib.  That's what we plan to do.

  • we have a convertible crib and we'll use it as a twin when we're done having our last kid.  DD is in a toddler bed, it works great and she doesn't have problems sleeping when we go out of town.  We got her a bed instead of changing the crib so we could obviously use the crib for DS.

so I guess it's personal preference.  the toddler bed saves room in DD's room, and she'll being using it for awhile

  • Ds crib converts only to a toddler bed and a "day bed" which is the toddler bed without the toddler rail.   We are talking about him using that for a while until we feel he is ready for a twin or nice bedset.  The new baby will just get a new crib because we figured that a new crib would cost about the same as a toddler bed anyway so it wasnt worth it for us to buy a toddler bed when his crib is already one.

  • We have a convertible crib that converts to a full size bed.  It will stay with Gabriel and he will use the full size bed.  The second bedroom will only fit a twin in our house, so we will get an Ikea crib for the next baby and then just buy a twin bed when it's time.

  • Both of my kids had convertible cribs(we bought another convertible crib when we had our second child), which we converted to toddler beds/day bed around the age of 2.5 - 3 years old and then coverted to full size beds about a year later.   They still have their converted full size beds and they are 7 & 10 years old now.  So for us it was worth it to buy each one of them their own convertibles.

If you don't want a full size conversion there are convertible cribs that convert into twin beds.

  • We have one.  The idea is nice, but I doubt we'll ever use it as a full bed.  For one, the conversion kit costs extra.  Kids beds really aren't that expensive, so it's not a huge savings.  Then if you want all the pieces for the set (like a nightstand), you either have to buy it ahead of time and store it or else hope the set isn't discontinued.  And lastly, you have to hope the crib holds up.  Noah chewed up the piece that would be the footboard, so we'd have to pay to have that refinished.

We were able to move Noah into a regular twin bed no problem and skipped the toddler bed all together.  The rails they have are extremely sturdy, so being higher off the ground hasn't been an issue

  • We went with a NON convertible crib and we're happy. The new baby will use the crib and DS is going into a twin bed within the next few weeks.  We'll buy a rail so he doesn't fall out and we are also taking out the box spring and just putting supports underneath the mattress to lower the height.
