NBR: Wood Flooring

I'd like to remove the nasty carpet in our living room, hall, master with wood floor & get new carpet for the kid's bedrooms too.  I want someone who will install it with the least work involved for us.  I can go to two different places too.  Any suggestions on where to look?

Re: NBR: Wood Flooring

  • We'll be installing hardwood floors though out our first floor in the near future, hopefully! We've already had KenMark and Schumacher come out to give us estimates. KenMark came in about $1,000 cheaper than Schumacher and they have been highly recommended by friends and family. I cannot wait to get rid of the nasty carpet in our house! Why would you install off-white carpet in the most high traffic area of the house?!

  • Ours is a light gray and hides dirt well, but its got diamond patterning on it.  Looks like something in a doctor's office!

Ugh, I feel your pain. We have gray carpet in our new house, and while it hides dirt, it is SO ugly! We also want hardwoods. My parents recently had Buddy's do their carpet in Cincy and they came in much lower than McSwain's.

  • This isn't an option for everyone but we took a week off work and installed 900 square feet of wood laminate ourselves and saved a ton. We chose a cherry stain from Lowe's and have been incredibly pleased.

  • Oops. I re-read it and now I think you're looking for carpet recommendations. we went with a guy who is independent for new carpeting last year. VERY pleased with his work and it saved us money. Let me know if you want his contact information and I'll dig it up.

We are thinking about doing the same thing, but since we are really not handy, we'll probably buy the laminate and have our handyman install it. Did you go with a higher-grade laminate? The laminate in our front hallway is pretty cheap, and while we could go with the same kind to match it and bring it into our kitchen, I am debating going with a higher-grade laminate and re-doing the whole area. I just can't decide.

  • We had the carpeting in our entire house replaced last summer and went with Flooring America (Buddy's Carpet).  They did everything but haul the carpet away - we just put it out with the trash pick up (they would have taken it but it would have cost more money)

We were very happy with it and love our carpet.  They do hardwoods too, but I'm not sure of the details on that since we did not do hardwood.

    Good luck!

  • Teacherjess - We chose a laminate that was on sale but one we liked. So it was a medium to high grade but for a reasonable price. It has held up very well.

Thanks. We looked a little at Lowe's today. There are SO many choices!
