Formal Introduction-IUGR Preemie

I posted last week about my IUGR DD.

She was born on Thursday, April 7th,  via c-section. Her gestational age was 35 weeks, she was measuring 32 weeks, IUGR because of cord restriction. Katherine April weighed 4 lbs 5 oz and was 18 1/2 inches long.

She has been doing so well. She is in NICU , but she has been breathing on her own since birth and got her IV out after only two days. She lost 1 oz during her first 4 days, but last night we found out she had her first gain!! Yay!

Her head is in the 4th precentile which really worries me because we know it can lead to delays and slow cognitive development. They have even mentioned microcephaly, even though it was just a 'maybe'. I am so scared for her.

Right now our biggest challenge is feeding. She just doesn't want to. She latches on great, but then just lays there and we end up tube feeding.
Today leaving the hospital I cried because we forced her to take one oz from a bottle (she was too sleepy for the breast). I felt so bad that we pushed her so hard and I even got a little frustrated when she gave up at the end. But then I picture her little face and have to remember she should still be inside.

I am so torn as to when to push her and when to realize that she's working so hard already!

How do you guys handle this?

Thanks Ladies.

  • Hello fellow May Bumpie!

Congrats on your little girl! She is precious!

The feeding piece is def. the most frustrating (not the hardest... just the most frustrating) part of the NICU as far as I am concerned. Tyler was born 2/12 at 28w4d and was 2lbs 2 oz. He has been in the NICU for 8 weeks now and feeding is still a struggle. It is very hard and it can take a while. Just like you said, they are still supposed to be inside. Don't push her too much, it will only stress her and waste energy (that should be for growing!). Tyler has just recently begun to take more feeds PO (by mouth)... but he still needs the tube at 37weeks gestation (and 8 weeks of life). It will come... I promise! :)

I hope your NICU stay continues to be easy and uneventful and your little girl catches on to eating really quick! :)

  • Hey lady! I hate that there are so many May mommas on this board.
Sounds like Katherine is quite the little fighter. Feedings will get better. My bigger boy started out slowly with the bottle but has stepped it up a lot this week. They just "get it" and the switch happens.
BTW, I sent you a PM yesterday :)
