2nd Trimester

anatomy scan revealed cysts on the baby's brain, how common?

We had our anatomy scan the other day at 19wks & 2days. The scan revealed there there were a few cysts on our little girl's brain. My widwife said that it was common and that they usually disappear on their own. Just as a precaution we're following up with a Fetal & Maternal group for a more detail ultrasound (I'm just excited that I get to see her again!). But, everyone I've told about the cysts seem very surprised and it gave me the impression they weren't all that common? Our midwife didn't seem concerned for the time being (I guess unless the other ultrasound shows something).

The ultrasound also reveled that her umbilical cord may not be entering the placenta properly (they said they couldn't get a good angle because her butt was in the way!) Does/has anyone have/had this problem?

I'm probably just being over-paranoid but when you're a first time mommy-to-be, it's kind of hard not to be Embarrassed

Re: anatomy scan revealed cysts on the baby's brain, how common?

  • My AS showed that she has a choroid plexus cyst in the fluid around her brain.  I have a f/u appt with the MFM next week.  My OB isn't worried at all.  He said they are very common and a lot of the time they dissolve by the f/u scan.  And if they don't he still isn't worried about it.  2 out of his 3 kids had it and they are perfectly healthy.  I also know a lot of people who know someone that had the same thing and they dissolved by the f/u.  GL--I know what it feels like to worry when no one else seems to be.

  • My nephew had one of his brain when my SIL went for her 20w ultrasound. It cleared up all on his own and today he is a very smart, 7-year-old.

  • Lurking from the babies board... my DD had this at her 18 week U/S.  She also had some fluid in her kidney.  I was, of course, terrified, but the dr wasn't worried and both "problems" had cleared up by the time we went back for our 28 w u/s.  She is a perfectly healthy little 3 1/2 month old, now! :)  Try not to stress!

  • My DD had a few CP cysts on her brain at the anatomy scan.. I was scheduled for a level 2 U/S a few weeks later. All the cysts resolved themselves on their own and she is now a very happy, healthy, smart soon to be 6 yr old!!

  • DD had 2 CPCs at our 18 week u/s.  We were told the presence of the cysts was soft marker for trisomy 18, but trisomy 18 usually has many other markers present such as a cleft palate, clenched hands, etc.  There were no other markers found, so they looked at my blood work from my quad screen, which showed a low risk for trisomy 18.  Therefore, they recommended a 3rd tri u/s to make sure everything was still developing OK.  They told us that typically the cysts resolve themselves by the time you have the f/u u/s.  Everything we researched supported what the specialist said, which was the cysts in isolation really don't mean anything.  We were very worried at first but by time it came around the f/u u/s most of the worry had dissipated, and when they told us the cysts were resolved and everything still looked normal with no other markers present, we were confident everything would be OK.  Sure enough DD was born fine with no concerns.

  • Thank you all so much! Hearing all of this has definately eased my mind that she will in fact, be just fine. Now it's just a waiting game until our next US.

And goodluck to anyone else who is or may deal with this Smile

  • I just posted about my dr. finding a choroid plexus cyst on my little boys brain.  She told me it was up to me if i wanted to go meet with a specialist and have a more in depth ultrasound or to wait until 28 weeks to have a repeat ultrasound, when the cyst would probably resolve itself by then.  I opted to go see a specialist just to ease my mind.  I haven't gone yet, but apparently after doing some research these are very common and usually go away and the baby is perfectly healthy.  Good luck and congrats on your little girl!!

  • My LO has one too.  Judging from talking with other moms on the bump, they do seem to be becoming more common.  My OB isn't worried one bit either because my LO has no other soft markers.  We met with a specialist just for reassurance, and she told us that the chances of our LO having a chromosomal disease is 1 in 10,000.  So don't worry!

  • DS1 had choroid plexus cysts in his brain at one of our ultrasounds too. They never even did a follow up ultrasound since they said they are incredibly common. I have had a few friends with LO's have the same thing. You are lucky you get to have a follow up u/s. I wish I could have to ease my mind, but he is perfect and healthy now! GL!
