What diaper pail to buy?

Hello all,

I have read so much about diaper pails and I'm just getting more confused. We are expecting our first child in the fall and I'm trying to find the best one. We live in a condo so we have access to a dumpster but I'd still like to get one that masks odors and is easy and inexpensive to use. Any advice?

Re: What diaper pail to buy?

  • I have the diaper champ but recently got the diaper genie...I like it SO much better!  The smell keeps more contained (DS doesn't have easy to dump diapers) and I like that the bag is already inside.  It holds a lot less, but that makes me change it more often instead of being lazy!  IMO I don't think the diaper refills are that expensive and don't seem to be going through a ton so far.

We are planning on cloth diapering, so I just got a Hefty 13.5 gallon pail with an easy open touch lid.  It was $16 from Target.  Might not be too smell proof, but diapers will be washed frequently, so that shoudn't be too big of a problem.  I did buy the munchkin arm and hammer nursery fresheners to pop in the pail if it is kinda smelly though!

  • Diaper Genie II Elite!  Hands free and totally contains the smell, even with DS's now super-stinky, real-food toddler diapers, LOL.

You can always find the refills on sale or a coupon, so they're not expensive at all- and they last awhile.  Even with emptying several times per week (2-3) one lasts us definitely longer than a month, probably closer to 2.

We loved ours so much we bought a second, to have one on each floor of our house.

  • We have the Munchin Arm & Hammer Diaper Pail and it sucks.  You get 10 bags for about $6.  We have had bags bust on us when they aren't even near full.  One of them was ripped right out of the box.  Their customer service is nice and sent us a new box of bags after I had 4 of the 10 in a box bust. As soon as we are through the last 2 boxes of bags that I have, I plan on taking the thing to Once Upon A Child and just getting a plain trash can with a lid.
