2nd Trimester

2nd Time Moms who breastfed ...question

My mom gave me a rocking chair for the nursery to nurse in... I am debating whether or not to spend the money and get a glider/ottoman instead (and use the rocker in another room).  I have a chance for a second-hand glider/ottoman for around $100.... Is this money well spent or is the rocker just fine for nursing? Was it something you wouldn't do without?  Thank you in advance!

  • For $100, I think it is worth it.  As baby got older, I started nursing everywhere in the house. But especially in that first month or two, I lived in the glider.  It was just comfortable to have all my nursing stuff in one place, and the chair was set up to support my back well as I nursed.  Also, everytime people came over, it was great to have a comfy place to retreat to and nurse my son.

A rocker is fine, but for the time I spent in that chair in the first couple of months, I would go for something comfy.

  • if you plan on exclusively breastfeeding, i highly recommend something more comfy. i spent so much time on my chair and was glad to have something like i did, we actually took many naps together on it too. and an ottoman just makes it more comfortable for you. or a nursing stool.

    GL!
  • Our glider was rarely used.  I preferred to nurse in bed.

  • I didn't nurse that much in the glider, except in the middle of the night, but I do spend a ton of time doing bedtime in it.  I use the ottoman as a dressing table of sorts and put her on it to put her in her PJ's or whatever while I sit in the glider.  I will be getting another one so I can have one in each room I use it so much.
  • I did not find our rocker comfortable for nursing. Even with some padding added, I got achey in that position, and would have prefered a glider.

  • My grandmother gave me her rocking chair.  The back was straight up, the seat didn't leave much room for a cushion.  I think gliders are much more comfortable  Big Smile

  • I prefer a lazy boy recliner that rocks.  I think i lived in mine.

This, exactly! But now that DD's older, we do bedtime snuggling and reading in it every night. We actually got a La-Z-Boy so we'd be able to fit in it for bedtime stories even after DD gets bigger.

  • I agree that it's worth it.  I lived in the glider (and took naps there too) with DD - thanks goodness it was comfy!
  • Yes, I love my glider/ottoman. I used it all the time for day and particularly night feedings and still use it to give DS his bottle before bedtime. He loves to be rocked in it. The price of $100 is excellent as well, I would go for itSmile

  • We didn't have a glider/ottoman until DS#2 was born. Wish I had it for DS#1.  We wouldn't buy the rocker w/o the ottoman. It's a set and it helps to have the ottoman so you can put your feet up and rock in unison with the glider.

  • Thank you all!  I just wanted to make sure it would be a decent investment!  We are going to go look at the used one tonight I think!

  • We have a rocker (borrowed from my parents) in the nursery but I could never nurse in it very comfortably because the arms were not padded and I couldn't really get the Boppy to fit correctly.  My go-to nursing spot was the wingback chair in our living room.  The arms were the perfect distance apart.

To answer your question, I would definitely spend $100 on a used glider.  I kind of wish we'd said no to my mom's offer of the rocker, honestly.

This.  I love our glider.  It is in DS room so I didn't use it as much as the couch for feedings but still got a lot of use!

  • I love my rocker, but the way it is built, it was not good for nursing. I really want a glider with ottoman this time around that looks kind of like a recliner for our living room.

I will say I plan on keeping my rocker because it worked so much better for rocking DS to sleep.

  • I EBF the twins and spent SO many hours in my glider. We still joke about how much time i sat in that chair.  Thank goodness it was so comfy!  We actually put it in the family room and i just used a couch in our sitting room when we were upstairs. I feel like it was worth every penny!
