The soda post got me thinking... do you give your kids bubble gum? DD is 4 and she's never had it. If your kids are allowed to chew gum, what age did they start?
My next door neighbor's daughter started chewing gum YOUNG. Like 2 I think? And chews it all the time.
Of course my son wanted it when he saw his buddy having it.
So.... I gave him a piece of my sugar free peppermint gum that was STRONG.
I knew he'd hate it since he hated my toothpaste at the time.
Cured him of wanting gum.
Now he says he hates it.
The younger one watched the whole thing go down so I asked him if he wanted to try it as his older brother was spitting into the trash can. He said "nooooo!" and has never asked.
I don't want them chewing gum this young and I figured this would be a better approach than a flat out "no" once he actually asked for some.
Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.
I let Ben chew gum every once in a while. My DH chews it all the time so Ben wants it too. I see nothing wrong with it. He chews it for about a minute and then spits it out. I try to get sugar free too but sometimes he gets the real stuff. I probably let him do a lot of things that people would think I shouldn't but they are not his mommy. He drinks sweet tea every day and eats candy most days and even has a Sprite a few times a week. He wasn't potty trained until a couple of months ago and still takes a paci to go to sleep at his nap and at night. He also has a few good habits. He is a great eater and eats 5-6 servings of veggies and fruit a day and when it's pretty, plays outside 3-4 hours a day. I think despite my bad habits, he's turned out alright so far....LOL!

I haven't let my DD chew gum yet, but I see a LOT of kids her age chewing it. If for some reason she was really interested in it, I'd let her try, but I honestly don't think she'd like it.

My 4.5 you finally got to where she won't swallow it. I don't let her chew it but when she is with her grandparents she does....that is also where she drinks sodas. She isn't with them very often at all though.
Not my kids (3 and almost 5) and I plan to hold off on letting them have it as long as I can. I personally can't stand gum, DH does chew it every so often but not much and never really when we are with the kids for some reason. I know at some point, they will have it and that will be fine but I will be teaching them the whole chew with your mouth shut and no cracking of the gum.
We have a no-gum-until-you-turn-8 rule at our house. My mom did it with my brother and I after a gum disaster. I plan on holding out on it for as long as possible. Although, I might allow a piece of gum on an airplane.
