Sippy cups

All Michael wants to do is chew on the spout and throw it.  He will hold it between his teeth and grin at me.  I tip the cup back to show that it has something in it and he is really not interested.  I have tried juice, formula, and water and all he does is get wet and then ignores it.  Any ideas?  He will be a year old in a month and I would like to be rid of bottles by 13 months. (I know that babies do not work on time tables but they should.  Stick out tongue)

Re: Sippy cups

  • Have you considered one of the cups that has a straw instead of a spout?  Maybe he will like that kind better?  We used the spout ones initially but Ellie switched to straws pretty easily and prefers those now, I think the liquid comes out easier, maybe.

Also, I think different cups work better/worse than others - so maybe you could try a different type and see if he likes it better?  I used Avent brand cups with Ellie and she seemed fine with them.

Last idea, have you tried actually drinking from the cup to show him how to do it?  Maybe if he sees you doing it he'll be motivated to try it himself?

Good luck, I hope he gets it soon!

  • If you find the magic answer.. please pass it along.  C will only drink juice and water out of a straw sippy (the Take and Toss ones are the best, IMO).  But his milk HAS to be in a bottle.

Regular sippy cups.. he just chews and plays with them, too.

And he's nearly 18 months old!!!!!  ARGH!

  • I had to forget about the sippies with silicone spouts b/c Adrian was constantly chewing on them and ripping them apart. I bought regular sippy cups with hard plastic cups and took the valve out so it would be easier to drink. In those I put water only to prevent a mess. Luckily, I also found sippies with hard spouts from Tommy Tippee that are easy to drink from, even with the valve in. I put the juice in those.

I've tried to put milk in various sippies, but Adrian will only play with them. He MUST have his milk from a bottle. I'm currently trying to get him used to regular bottles instead of the Dr. B ones, which are a huge pain to clean. Once that's done, I'll be happier. Even if he still uses bottles, at least they will be the kind that you can clean easily. Small victories, lol.

  • I had to tip the sippy up for M until he was well over a year old. Other than that I've heard the sippies with straws can work.

All of this.  Rachel likes to drink out of her straw sippy if I have a drink with a straw. I've also had one of her sippys while she has had one too.  It took her about a month before she really go the hang of it.  I leave one full of water on the coffee table so she can get some water anytime she wants it.
