Babies: 3 - 6 Months

sleep question in 3.5 month old

My son sometimes sleeps almost through the night (8-6) and other times wakes up anywhere from 2-5 AM to eat once. He only eats once in the middle of the night then sleeps until 8-8:30. However, last night he woke up at midnight crying. We tried the pacifier, rocking, etc but he kept waking up. Finally, I fed him at 1 AM. He went right back to sleep after that but woke up again to feed around 5 AM. He hasn't fed twice in the middle of the night since he was 6 weeks old! My question is, could this just be the 3 month growth spurt coming a little late or should I be concerned about going backwards in our sleep habits? I don't want to be feeding him twice every night but nothing else seemed to work and he is too young to just let him cry it out in my opinion. Any advice on what to do if he keeps waking up twice? Thanks!

Re: sleep question in 3.5 month old

  • If he's hungry, I'd feed him.  The 3 month growth spurt was horrible for us and he ate more at night than when he was a newborn.  Also, the 4 month wakeful started for us around 3.5 months.  Sleep and his normal schedule went out the window for a couple weeks, but he corrected it himself.

IMO, feeding him more than once at night on occasion is not going to turn into a bad habit.

  • If he's taking a full feeding at night, he's probably hungry ad should be fed.  If he just nurses for a couple of mins and passes out he might just be nursing for comfort and you could offer a paci instead.  DD is going thru her 3 mo gs right now and has been nursing constantly for 3 days.  I would give it a few days before worrying he's regressing.
I give up trying to get a ticker.  I have a DD that is 2.5 years old and is awesome.  Maybe I'll add a quote to distinguish myself.  Hmmm.  How about...

  • 3 month growth spurt is followed closely by a 4 month one for us. Feed him when in doubt for now.

You could also be approaching the wakeful. That's when it started for us.

  • Uggghhhhh I have zero advice but wanted to let you know you're not alone. I also may or may not be stealing advice that bumpies are posting here.

Last night my DD went to bed at 7:30, woke up twice before 9, slept till 12:30 then wanted to nurse every two hours. I don't know if it's a growth spurt or the 4 month wakeful, but I want it to stop! She used to sleep from 7:30-4 and I miss it!

  • What is the 4 month wakeful and when does it end? DS has not been sleeping like he used to for the past two weeks. For some reason I didn't think they regressed in sleep until 6 months or so when their teeth started to come in......

  • DS was up every 2 hours until last week...pretty sure it was a growth spurt. Like PPs said, if he's eating, then he's hungry.

  • Sounds like the 4 mo wakeful (https://www.kellymom.com/parenting/sleep/4mo-sleep.html).

DS had been STTN since 6 weeks.  Around 3.5 mos, he started waking once during the night (at a different time each night) to eat and would go back to sleep until the morning.  It lasted about 2 weeks for us.  He is now back to STTN and is taking AWESOME naps during the day (he was NOT a napper before this).

If he wakes up hungry, feed him.  He just needs an extra meal due to growing and/or being distracted during the day.

  • it sounds like a growth spurt--I wouldn't worry.

But if you're worried, maybe try giving him a larger portion of food right before bed (if you're FF or if you pump at all)
