Pregnant after 35

Yesterday's appt.....I gained 9 pounds in two weeks

So I had my 34 week appt. yesterday and was totally bummed out to hear that I gained 9 pounds in two weeks (explains the aches and pains, swollen feet and 'full' feeling).  The nurse wanted to know what I was doing and not doing to get to this point.  Pre-pregnancy I was training for my first marathon and dropped out when I discovered I was pregnant so the most exercise I've been getting is walking to and from the car for work and an occasional walk with DH and dog.  I had to confess that DH and I have been going through three 1/2 gallons of ice-cream a week (a huge weakness).  I was so embarrassed because I thought I've been doing well.  She said they like weight goals to be between 30-35 pounds and I've gained 36 so far.  She also went on to say this late in the game I'm looking at LO to gain 1 pound per week so I'll be well over the goal.  Anyone else get a straight talk from their doctor.  Sad

  • Was she acting like that was actual weight gain or fluid retention? Because I don't think you can have enough ice cream to actually add 3500 x 9 calories in 14 days to your body.

How was your blood pressure? That's why I've been suddenly gaining 5-6 pounds per week.

  • BP was perfect (usually I have to have it done 2 or 3 additional times) and urine test came out fine.  I do feel lazier these days but that's because my feet are really hurting so maybe it is due to fluid retention.  I just felt a little foolish because being a first time mom I didn't think you could overdo it by eating a little more than normal.

  • I had a 6 lbs. weight gain and was bummed.  The doctor told me not to look at it like I gained the weight because of my breast, amniotic fluid, blood increase and baby weight were all a factor.  My SO says it's the earth shifting and that I shouldn't pay attention to it.  I like their reasoning. Smile

  • Have you been constipated lately?  Could be fluid and/or poop.  (Sorry to sound gross).  My appt. before last, midwife told me I was gaining too much weight.  I was extremely bloated at the time.  This week, (4 weeks after last appt.) I had only gained one pound.  I made sure I ate roughage before hand to cleanse and emptied before appt. and drank lots of water to help with the water retention.  Belly is measuring the size it needs to be and my weight is now "under control".
  • I could have written that almost word for word!!  Before this pregnancy, I was working out 7 days a week, competing in triathalons and running half marathons (I lost 50 pounds and had 30 more to go).  I was SO exhausted in my first tri I did NOTHING.  And now, at 28 weeks, I just took the bus for a 10 block distance.  LAME on my part.  But I'm so...bleh.  I've gained 28 pounds to far - at 28 weeks.  My doctor hasn't said anything but I also know the "worst" is yet to come.

I think baby's had a growth spurt recently - usually I'm fairly graceful and aware of my belly.  Yesterday I pushed into my desk and jolted my bump almost every single time - and I hit it with the bathroom stall door several times as well.  Looking down today, it LOOKS a lot bigger...

I don't get on the scale at home - I just don't.  mentally it's very difficult for me to do it.  I have a food addiction and it's completely out of control right now - I keep telling myself that this is only until the baby comes, then back to healthy eating.  But truthfully, I'm scared whitless.

Sorry - I guess this turned into a whiney post.  Hang in there, I feel your pain!

  • I have to give the side eye to any doctor's office that nit picks over a pound or two during pregnancy.

I've gained 54 pounds during my pregnancy... my doctors aren't the least bit concerned.

Maybe it's because I had a gastric bypass so they know I can't be over eating... Maybe it's because they know my thyroid function is borderline/hypo right now

Whatever the reason... I've had weeks/months where I gain absolutely nothing, and then a month later 8-10 lbs shows up (I've had 3 growth spurts like this during the entire pregnancy)

As long as the baby is growing at a healthy rate and you're getting the nutrients you need, that's all that's important. The weight will come back off once the baby gets here.

Hell I got yelled at for not gaining anything between week's 29-32, then when I weighed in at 33.5 weeks, bam, 3 lbs out of no where.

Make sure you're eating is the phrase i hear the most.

  • I stand by the old saying....One time does not a trend make....Now, if next appt you are up another 5-9 lbs then I say.....TWO times does not a trend make!!! I'm at the point that I just don't care. If my BP is good, no protein in the urine, then screw it. We only have a few weeks left. Enjoy the icecream. But I'm a reble at heartCool
  • Don't worry, it's a lot of fluid. When you gain that fast it's fluid retention and will come off when you deliver.  GL
