High-Risk Pregnancy

Question for my fellow blood thinner ladies...

Im a first time mom and am currious as to whether or not I will have to be induced due to the blood thinners? Im not even really sure if that is even what happens when ladies are on blood thinners so just wondering if they induce or if they just let it happen naturally?

Re: Question for my fellow blood thinner ladies...

  • I'm on blood thinners, and have had cs because of my other issues, But I would bet you could go naturally. They usually will have you stop the thinners like 2 weeks before your due date, than go from there. I know with me, I was on the shots 2 more weeks post. Everyone is diff though! GL

  • I will be induced.  They have to plan to take you off of the blood thinners because being on them at the time of birth could cause excessive bleeding.  My doctor would not be comfortable with me being off of them for anything more than 24 hours before the induction and then I go right back on them after the birth.

I know some docs will switch patients from Lovenox to heparin at around 35 weeks.  Straight heparin is reversible, whereas Lovenox is not, but even with that, my doctor would still want to induce me.

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

  • I think it depends on why you are on blood thinners, not necessarily the fact that you are on them.  I would expect that your OB/MFM would have you stop them at some point, but could very well let you go into labor on your own.  I have MTHFR and I'm on Lovenox.  I will have an amnio at 37 wks and if all is well, I will be induced at that point because according to my MFM, at that point with MTHFR it is much safer for the baby to be out because if they are still in you are just waiting for something bad to happen.

  • my doctor said that she will induce me at 38 weeks because of my blood clotting disorder, nto because of the blood thinners. she said their is a potential higher risk for stillbirth, etc so they dont like to let the baby bake for too long. that said, i have the option of delivering vaginally or via c-section. my doctor has women take heparin after 36 weeks because their is an "anti" shot they can give you so you dont bleed out. this gives me more options for delivery, and is helpful if i go into labor naturally. some doctors dont even bother with that switch from lovenox to heparin.

This. Initially MFM told me they would want me induced, my Dr on the other hand doesn't think it is necessary unless complications arise.

Same here, and I was initially told they'll even let me go past the 40 week mark, as long as everything looks ok...though I suspect they won't be happy if I go past 41 weeks.  OTOH, despite my history (3 DVTs in addition to FVL), baby and I have thus far managed to pass every test they throw at us(with the exception of iron levels, and they deferred to my hematologist on that one) with flying colors(including having my dosage go DOWN from what they had me on for just TTC), so we haven't really given them much to worry about otherwise.

  • I started Lovenox in early November due to a DVT. At 35 weeks, they will start me on Heparin. I will be induced at 39 weeks and have to stop giving myself injections 24 hours prior. I will start the injections again 12-24 hours after delivery. They are very, very careful about me not going into labor without the induction due to being on blood thinners. From the doctors I see (Blood Specialists, OB and Perinatalogist) they would never let me go into labor on my own due to being on these meds. Part of it is due to excess bleeding and the other because it impacts getting an epidural.
