  We use the rain setting which sounds like white noise...

  I think it depends on your child. 

   for Colin it is white noise, we use the Rain on the sound machine or the static of the baby monitor.  calms him down immediately...The rain sometimes puts him to sleep.

  My guy falls asleep to the cradle song on it every night.  My husband and I are so used to it too that we cannot fall asleep without it now either
