Please, please, please never let my computer be confiscated (Confession)

I am watching My Strange Addiction on DFH and it's about this guy who claims to be "in love" with his Real Doll. It's a synthetic sex doll that is freakishly real looking. He buys her clothes and jewelry. He has totally humanized her. Even had matching rings made for their 10 year anniversary. So my curiosity got the best of me and I googled Real Doll to see how much he paid for this thing. So if my computer is ever confiscated it's going to look like I was shopping for sex dolls.

BTW, in case you were wondering, that doll was $5,999. I'm pretty sure he could have gotten a whole lot of sex with prostitutes at Eastgate Mall for that kind of cake.

  • Interesting. I just attended a conference in D.C. a few weeks ago at which one of the speakers (John Gottman) spoke on the subject "sex with robots" and hypothesized that within the next 20 years, it will be common practice for people to engage in sexul activities with life-like robots. In fact, these relationships will replace human relations (per Gottman's prediction).

The marriage counselor in me is saddened by that prediction.

P.S. Holy he!!, $5999? Do you know how much of a dent I could make in my student loans with that kind of money?!

  • BBCAmerica had a 2-hour long documentary on that same subject a few years ago. I found it fascinating. I'm going to have to look for this one, too!

  • I wonder if he was the inspiration for this:

I haven't seen it but remember being morbidly curious about it at the time.

  • All I can say is WOW!

I've seen it, and I enjoyed it. That's the fascinating part about these guys, is it's not about the sex, at all! They actually believe that they're having true relationships with the dolls.

The other one that's interesting is the women who buy those lifelike baby dolls.  They creep me out, but the women treat them like real babies. So weird.

There's actually a movie that came out about this.. Ryan Gosling was in it. He was a loner in a small town and everyone started treating the doll like a person.. It was quirky but very good. I *think* it's called "Lars and the real girl"

Yeah, that's the movie she linked to above.

  • Lars and the Real Girl is a good movie.
    image Ready to rumble.
  • I wanted to see Lars and the Real Girl.

Jersey: I watched something and have read a few articles on the women with the dolls. There was an issue a few years ago where someone called the police to report a baby left alone in a car. Police came and broke into the car and it turned out to be one of these dolls. Was that here or in Vegas? I can't remember when I saw that.

The guy with the doll was making the argument that his actions aren't hurting anyone, which is certainly true. However, I can't help but feel he and other men like him aren't living a full existence when they close themselves off to genuine human relationships in favor of an artificial proxy. While I certainly defend their right to live as they see fit, I can't help but pity him a bit.

  • I haven't seen it, but can only imagine what the show was like based on stuff I've ready and bits and pieces of other things I've seen.  So. Odd.  But that is me, and I am not socially awkward or nervous around new people (I don't think I am, I suppose the true judge would be the new people I'm around...) so maybe it works for those types of people...?

  • The women with the dolls give me the heebie jeebies and I bet the robot doll sex would too.
  • Let's just round that up to $6K.  I could remodel my kitchen for that and put it to better use.

And can I say that I just love that you threw in the reference to Eastgate Mall???
