How do you handle pre-school vacations? It seems a lot of pre-schools
have 4 weeks a year they are closed (Christmas week, spring break, one
week beginning summer, one week at summer's end). We would barely have
enough time to cover all of these. I am certain I could convince my
parents to help with some of it (they're retired but live 4.5 hours
away) and we would use our vacations for the rest. I guess I am used to
taking vacation at my interval, not school. Is this just practice for
the big leagues?
Re: pre-school vacations
ours is only closed for the week b/w x-mas and new year's; they are also closed on Good Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, and one (maybe 2) other random days that are teacher work days. 4 weeks seems excessive!
Wow, 4 weeks is a lot! We're spoiled because our DCP rarely takes a vacation and doesn't even close for Christmas break.
I guess if I were you, I would use one of those weeks as a family vacation (or staycation), and then maybe you and DH each take a week and get grandparent's to help for the last week? Sheesh, that is a lot of coordination and leave, though. Maybe ask the other parents their plans and suggest a babysitting coop?
My DD's preschool is like that too - they're closed for a total of about 4.5 weeks a year or something like that. I love her school, so I just make arrangements. My parents are local, so that really helps! Sometimes my MIL (the nice one) flies up for a week. Our neighbors make arrangements with the in-home daycare lady their 2 yr. old goes to for her to watch their 4 yr. old sometimes during those weeks, and other weeks they just take their vacation that week (they're going to the beach next week, I'm so jealous!).
But yeah, it's a pain. I also consider it a warm up to the big leagues - when they're in Kindergarten they'll have a lot of random time off beside winter and spring break, like teacher work days and stuff like that. My coworker who has an 8 year old daughter takes all his vacations around her school schedule. I think that's just the way it's going to be...
That's a lot, but probably a good way to ease into elementary school, when you have those breaks and you still have to arrange summer camps to cover the rest of the summer.
I would probably loop in both my FIL (local) and my parents (in OH) to split the time as long as they're able to, and turn one of the weeks into our family vacation, then split any uncovered days between me and DH. My parents are always eager to have an excuse to see DD, so last year they came out to cover the week our DCP took her summer vacation.
