Repost: My boss' random "offer" WWYD?

I went in today to my school to visit my first graders and the office and show them LO. I poked my head into my principals office to say hi to him and show him the baby. He said to come in and then shut the door. I told him I didn't need to talk to him, I was just saying hi, and he said he wanted to talk to me. First of all, as far as I know, they did not know I was coming in today. Next week is spring break, and I had planned to go back to work the next Monday after spring break. He said he had heard that LO had had lots of problems (colic and GI problems) and that I was having a hard time ( no idea how he heard this) and he wanted to know who was going to keep him while I came back. He wanted to know why I was coming back?-b/c of the money. I told him I wanted to work there next year too. He said he didn't want me going back and trying to work and the baby getting sick, or me not being able to work and then have to stop working again. He'd rather me be there every single day or just not come back. [I've been out a lot this year, and it's my first year teaching. I was out for about 2-3 weeks in Oct from herniated disk from preg. and then on bedrest a few weeks before delivery, and now I'm out for 6 weeks post delivery]. He made me an offer to pay me for 1/2 the days if I wanted to stay home. He said he has never done this before and to not mention it to anyone else at work/friends. It will be about 4 1/2 weeks till summer break. So, basically he'd pay me about $1500 or so and I think I'd get to keep my insurance too and still get a small paycheck till July. Not for sure exactly with all the finances yet. But either way if I go back or not, I'm not going to be making hardly anything. I asked him if he was going to hire me for next year and he said he didn't know but that if I took off it wouldn't make a difference on if I got a job or not for next year. He wouldn't tell me if I had a job next year or not. I'm in shock. I just went in for a visit and now I have to make this big decision by tomorrow. To stay home for 4 1/2 weeks with my baby or go back? I don't want to bust my butt going back if I'm giong to get fired anyway. I really don't know what I want to do. I kinda want to leave the house and have a life again, but it's going to be so hard staying up all night and then dealing with kids all day too.WWYD??? HELP!

  • Wow that is a tough decision for him to lay on you!  If I were you I would probably stay home with LO, especially if you will be worrying about your job security for next year anyway, why not spend the time at home worrying that away from your LO worrying?  I am a teacher too.  I am taking the rest of the school year off, even if it means 4 weeks of unpaid time.  Luckily I had 25 sick days built up (but that is over 8years!).  Hang in there girlie, you have many years to work your butt off!

  • Can he really offer this to you??? Even if my principal wanted to offer this he couldn't based on the contract with the union. I would confirm that I would actually be making the money before making a decision based on that. If everything were legit I would choose to stay home.
  • i know its hard for teachers everywhere, but would you be able to find job at another school or district while you were off? that would be more time to look and still stay at home with LO while not being completely out of work/insurance/money

    This is what I'm thinking!

  • I'm a teacher, too... and I was hired on a 1-year contract for this school year, so I don't have a guarantee of work for next year. Like you, I am planning to go back for the last month or so of school. I really wanted to take the rest of the year off but I need the money, and wanted to show that I am dedicated to increase my chances of being re-hired for next year.

If I was in your shoes, and got an offer like that, I would probably want to get something in writing before agreeing to anything. If they really are going to honor their deal, I'd probably consider taking it, personally. I'd love to stay home with my LO through the end of the summer and if I could get paid (even if it was 50% of my pay) to stay home, I'd do it.

  • I agree with PPs that I would verify that your boss can truely make the offer happen, and then take him up on it.

How much would you be paying for childcare? If you eliminate childcare costs, it might be pretty close to what you would be bringing home if you worked and paid childcare.
