raw egg

ok, so I know that raw egg is not good, and we are not supposed to eat it. I am having a dinner with friends, and I want to make my favorite salad, but it has raw egg in the dressing. I have had it a zillion times (so has my whole family) and we've never gotten sick from it. I buy fresh eggs only. Can I make it and have it just a little?

Has anyone gotten sick for real from eggs, or is it just a precaution? My midwife told me deli meat was ok, just make sure its fresh, and dont eat it every day.

Opinions?

Re: raw egg

  • I know a lot of people would disagree but I would eat it. I have added the step of washing my eggs before I crack them and I only buy organic. I wash because I worry about cross contamination on the shell while in the store.

  • The chances of you getting salmonella or something are slim, but it does happen. As long as the eggs are pasteurized, I would eat it.

  • I probably wouldn't eat it, but I'm a little paranoid.  Could you just get egg-beaters?  They are pasteurized and generally safer.
  • yes, i know someone that got really sick from eating raw cookie dough.  so for that reason alone, i wouldn't do it myself.

  • I've eaten several dressings and sauces that have raw egg and baby and I are fine.  I would make sure it stays properly refrigerated and use fresh eggs, those kind of precautions, but I'd eat it.

  • I did. I had salmonella when I was only a few years old. I eat a lot of raw eggs and have never gotten sick again but it's always a possibility.

  • I wouldn't risk it.  Plus, if you are going to it should be on raw cookie dough :)
  • I am 16 weeks preg and a chef. I had to do a tasting of fresh dressings that all had eggs in tem. I say one salad will be fine. But, you can buy liquid pastuerized yolks at the store, that's what I do at home.

  • look into tempering your eggs (i think that's what it's called).  It gently heats the eggs to a safe temperature without cooking them, then it's safe to add to dressing.  I eat over easy eggs all the time though.  Your risks are much lower if you buy organic (local is even better).
